Report: Ulrick John Suffered Broken Ankle

New, comments

According to a report from the Indianapolis Star's Stephen Holder, Colts rookie offensive tackle Ulrick John is feared to have suffered a broken ankle in last night's preseason game.

I know that you're all anxiously awaiting any news about the injury to starting center Khaled Holmes, but we've got a report on another Colts offensive lineman who was injured in last night's game, and that is rookie offensive tackle Ulrick John.  According to a report this morning from the Indianapolis Star's Stephen Holder (who's almost always right on Colts things), the fear is that John suffered a broken ankle in last night's preseason opener.

Nothing official yet, and it's important to keep that in mind when discussing this.  But the initial report suggests that it's a broken ankle for John, which would likely put him out for much of the season.  Of course, John was a long shot to make the roster anyway.  An unknown when the Colts drafted him in the seventh round this spring, he was viewed as a developmental prospect at left tackle, and as such he was most likely to end up on the practice squad, if anything.  Now, if the reports of a broken ankle are indeed true, then the Colts would have a decision to make.  Do they like John enough to keep him around to continue to develop him, or do they just waive him instead?  And if they're interested in keeping him around, they wouldn't want to take up a spot on the active roster or on the practice squad for an injured guy, so instead we might see him placed on the team's injured reserve.  Again, this is all just speculation, and the injury really doesn't hurt the Colts team as much because John was a long shot to make the team anyway.  But it's a real tough break for the rookie playing in his first NFL game, and I feel for him.

Oh, and since you're all still wondering about the Khaled Holmes injury, we have no update yet from the Colts (it's a players day off today), but reports are starting to trickle out.  The Indy Star's Mike Chappell has the latest report I've seen, and it's encouraging.

We'll continue to update you on all the injuries as we hear more about them, so stay tuned, but initial reports suggest not so good news for Ulrick John but relatively good news about Khaled Holmes.
