A few of you have asked over the past few weeks about the Colts and reserve/future contracts and why they hadn't made many moves in that area, but today the team announced that they have signed ten players to reserve/future contracts. These ten players are those who ended the season on the practice squad. Here's the list of the ten players signed to reserve/future contracts by the team tonight:
WR Kadron Boone
DE Gannon Conway
RB Jeff Demps
LB Carlos Fields
S Winston Guy
T Tyler Hoover
WR Ryan Lankford
WR Josh Lenz
DT Kelcy Quarles
TE Erik Swoope
Basically, the reserve/future contracts are for the offseason, ensuring that the player signing the contract is locked up for offseason activities and workouts with the team, counting toward their 90-man offseason roster limit. Obviously, during the season the roster is at 53-players, but through the offseason and much of training camp the roster is at 90 players and this is in order to both get more players a chance and allow teams to have more competition. So around this time of the year NFL teams will sign a number of players to reserve/future contracts to make sure that the player will be around in the offseason.
You'll likely notice a few of the names above, such as running back Jeff Demps (who won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics as a sprinter) and tight end Erik Swoope (the college basketball player at Miami turned tight end by the Colts). Many of these players are some who the Colts have their eye on and it will be interesting to watch them through the offseason and into training camp.
