The second day of practice is in the books for the Indianapolis Colts as they prepare to take on the New Orleans Saints this weekend, and there are a couple of injury situations that are worth keeping an eye on - particularly at the safety position, where neither Mike Adams nor Clayton Geathers have practiced yet this week.
Here's Thursday's full injury report for the Colts:
Did Not Practice:
Mike Adams, S (hamstring)
Clayton Geathers, S (knee)
D'Qwell Jackson, ILB (rest)
Limited Practice:
Jerrell Freeman, ILB (groin)
Full Practice:
Nate Irving, ILB (knee)
Robert Mathis, OLB (rest Wednesday)
Andre Johnson, WR (rest Wednesday)
Vontae Davis, CB (rest Wednesday)
Several players returned to practice today after getting a rest day yesterday, while inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson received a rest day today. Furthermore, inside linebacker Nate Irving was a full participant for the second straight day, while quarterback Andrew Luck still hasn't shown up on the injury report this week (that's a good thing).
The real injuries of note have to do with safeties Mike Adams and Clayton Geathers and inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman. Freeman did not participate in practice yesterday but was limited today, so he's heading in the right direction but his status is still uncertain. He played on Sunday but had previously missed the team's week five game, so it's clear that he's still dealing with this groin injury. Hopefully he'll be able to go this weekend, but at the same time it needs to be at least considered whether resting him would be better in order to get him fully healthy - in other words taking a hit short-term to improve long-term. That's a decision that only the coaches and trainers can make, as they have all the details that we don't.
Lastly, the safety position has a few guys dealing with injuries, which is the reason why the Colts signed Dewey McDonald earlier in the week. Both Mike Adams and Clayton Geathers were injured last week against the Patriots and are described as day to day, but the reality is that they've missed each of the last two practices, which absolutely leaves their status in doubt. You'd think that they will need to practice tomorrow in order to play on Sunday, so we'll have to keep an eye on that. Right now, though, it seems very possible that the Colts could be without both Mike Adams and Clayton Geathers this Sunday when they go up against Drew Brees and the Saints' offense.
