The Colts returned to practice today - for the most part. As the team began preparations for their game against theTampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday, they were missing a number of key players on the practice field.
In all, twelve players showed up on today's injury report, with ten of them not practicing at all (though two due to rest). That includes a number of key starters, some of whom were expected to be on this list and others who are surprises.
Here's the full injury report (it's rather long today), followed by some comments:
Did Not Practice:
Mike Adams, S (ankle)
Anthony Castonzo, T (knee)
Vontae Davis, CB (hamstring)
Phillip Dorsett, WR (ankle)
Jerrell Freeman, ILB (ribs)
Frank Gore, RB (ankle)
Andrew Luck, QB (abdomen/kidney)
Erik Walden, OLB (foot)
Andre Johnson, WR (rest)
Robert Mathis, OLB (rest)
Limited Practice:
D'Joun Smith, CB (knee)
Hugh Thornton, G (shoulder)
We know that Andrew Luck will be out for an extended period of time as he recovers from a lacerated kidney and a partially torn abdominal muscle, as he will miss his second straight game this Sunday. A mid-December return is still most likely for Luck. Furthermore, starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo will miss extended time as well after suffering an MCL sprain last week. He's listed as week-to-week. Wide receiver Phillip Dorsett is still recovering from a fractured fibula suffered earlier this year, and while he's nearing the end of the timetable given, he's still likely to miss a bit of time.
As for Vontae Davis, he was injured during Sunday's game as well and was listed as day-to-day with his hamstring injury after tests came back negative. Day-to-day with the Colts doesn't necessarily mean that he'll play this weekend, however, so that is worth keeping an eye on for sure. Another player in the secondary who is dealing with an injury is starting safety Mike Adams, who missed last Sunday's game with an ankle injury suffered in week nine. We don't really have a timetable for his return, but it initially didn't sound like a serious injury. He still hasn't returned to practice, though, so we really can't say whether he's expected to be back this weekend or not.
Frank Gore was also injured on Sunday, and we saw him limping around somewhat during the game. CBS reported during the game it was a quad contusion, others have said a knee, and now the injury report lists him with an ankle. In other words, he's just beat up, and Chuck Pagano described his injury today as "bumps and bruises." It doesn't sound like a major reason for concern, but we'll see.
Two newcomers to the injury report today were linebackers Jerrell Freeman and Erik Walden, both of whom are dealing with injuries that were, presumably, suffered on Sunday. Walden had a boot on his right foot today, so that's worth watching.
