The Indianapolis Colts returned to the practice field on Thursday to continue preparations for a big Sunday Night Football game in Pittsburgh against the Steelers, but not everyone returned to the practice field today.
As expected, guys like Anthony Castonzo, Andrew Luck, Jerrell Freeman, and Phillip Dorsett missed practice today, but perhaps more notable is that starting right guard Hugh Thornton missed practice for the second straight day. Safety Mike Adams, however, was a limited participant in practice, which is a step in the right direction.
Here's the full practice report from Thursday, followed by some comments:
Did Not Practice:
Anthony Castonzo, LT (knee)
Phillip Dorsett, WR (ankle)
Jerrell Freeman, ILB (hamstring)
Andrew Luck, QB (abdomen/kidney)
Hugh Thornton, OL (elbow)
Khaled Holmes, C/G (fibula)
D'Qwell Jackson, ILB (rest)
Greg Toler, CB (rest)
Limited Practice:
Mike Adams, S (ankle/hamstring)
Full Practice:
Erik Walden, OLB (heel)
Trent Cole, OLB (rest Wednesday)
Vontae Davis, CB (rest Wednesday)
Andre Johnson, WR (rest Wednesday)
Robert Mathis, OLB (rest Wednesday)
One of the biggest things the Colts have focused on is continuity along the offensive line, and so far this year the unit has done a better job than expected. They haven't switched up the line much, but now they have serious questions about the lineup. Last week, the Colts played without left tackle Anthony Castonzo for the first time since 2011. They will be without Castonzo once again this week, meaning that Joe Reitz will again move to left tackle and Denzelle Good likely (though not officially) will start at right tackle. That is enough to leave major questions, but now starting right guard Hugh Thornton has missed practice the last two days. To replace him, the Colts would likely have either Lance Louis or Todd Herremans replace him, but neither are great options. Again, the Colts have enough concerns along the line with Castonzo out, so if they will be without Thornton as well that would lead to even more questions. And to add to that, Khaled Holmes was added to the injury report today with a fibula injury, which would leave the Colts with one less player for depth along the line too. Considering all of this, the offensive line is clearly the biggest question mark entering this Sunday's game.
The Colts will also be without a few other starters, as Andrew Luck is still out with his kidney/abdomen injury, and inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman is week-to-week with a hamstring injury as well. The good news, though, is that safety Mike Adams was back at practice today in a limited role, which is a step in the right direction. It's still unclear whether Adams will be able to play this Sunday, but it seems as if he's at least getting closer after missing the past two games.
