Today is the day that we've been waiting for! Ok, not really, but today is still a significant day for the Indianapolis Colts, as they return to their West 56th Street complex for the first time this offseason to begin their offseason workout program!
Teams with a new head coach could begin their program a few weeks ago, but for teams with a returning head coach like the Colts, today is the first day that they are able to begin such a routine. Today and throughout the first part of the offseason program, it is purely a weight room and strength and conditioning workout, while injured players can also work on rehab.
The second part of the offseason program (as mandated by the CBA) involves on-field work in the category of individual position drills, while then the third and final part of the program is team on-field workouts, such as 7-on-7 and 11-on-11. This is what the Colts will be doing when fans are able to watch them on June 10 at Lucas Oil Stadium during their veteran mini-camp. That three-day minicamp will be the conclusion of the Colts' eight-week offseason program, and the program will also include a rookie minicamp on the weekend after the draft (May 8-10).
Put simply, offseason workouts aren't that exciting for most fans and it's just weight room stuff for now, but this is still an incredibly important time of the year for the players as they seek to get in better shape and stay conditioned. It's not much and the Colts still won't be getting on the field quite yet (and there won't be media availability until Wednesday), but the players are returning to Indianapolis for their eight-week offseason program that starts today.
Over the past few days, a number of Colts players have taken to social media as they head back to Indy to begin the offseason program:
