On Thursday night, the Indianapolis Colts used their first round pick to draft Miami wide receiver Philip Dorsett, and the team's draft continued on Friday night. They traded back in what was clearly a good move, meaning they had two third round picks. They used those picks to select Florida Atlantic cornerback D'Joun Smith and Stanford defensive end Henry Anderson. The draft continues on Saturday with rounds four through seven.
For now, though, let's take a way-too-early look at some grades for the Colts' two third round picks.
CBS Sports' Pete Prisco gave the pick of Smith a B+
I like this a pick a lot. They need another corner and this kid can flat out play. The Colts are having a nice draft.
Prisco gave the selection of Anderson a B
I know a lot of draftniks loved him, but I wasn't as sold. He's a solid backup, but I don't think he will be anything more than that.
NFL.com's Bryan Fischer gave the Colts an "A" grade on day two for the selections of Smith and Anderson, and after a "B-" grade after round one, he's given the Colts a "B+" on the draft as a whole so far.
The Colts added another speedy wideout to what was already one of the deepest receiving corps in the league. While Andrew Luck will no doubt be happy, the team could have addressed another position such as offensive line or upgraded its defense. There are some questions about Dorsett's ability, but this team will have offensive weapons for days. Smith fills a need on defense and was a favorite of many scouts. Anderson is a filthy steal late in the third round and should be a super disruptive player on the defensive line.
Mocking the Draft's Dan Kadar gives the Colts a "C" overall for the draft - but only because he wants them to draft based on need:
From a system fit, Anderson is a great pick. He may not be able to play over the nose, but he'll help the Colts' run defense at end. I'm fine with the choice of Smith, even though No. 65 was a little early for him. The issue thus far is Indianapolis ignoring the offensive line and outside linebacker spots.
So what about you? We give Colts fans the opportunity to vote on their opinion of the picks, and after fans really didn't like the first round pick, they liked the third round picks much better.
For the pick of D'Joun Smith, the most common grade amongst those who voted was a B:
As for the pick of Henry Anderson, the most common grade amongst those who voted was an A:
