The Indianapolis Colts have so far been very fortunate when it comes to injuries. Sure, they've had some injuries - like Hugh Thornton's knee or Greg Toler's neck - but in comparison to the rest of the league, the Colts have been very lucky. Hopefully that good fortune continues, but defensive tackle Arthur Jones left tonight's preseason game with an ankle injury.
Jones was injured on the second snap of the game and was down on the field briefly before getting up and limping off the field. His ankle was wrapped and iced and, though he has yet to go to the locker room and is still on the bench, he has been ruled out for the game with a left ankle injury.
We really don't know anything further than that, so hopefully it's nothing serious. The starters won't need to play another snap until the September 13 regular season opener, so Jones will have plenty of time to recover. It's not time to panic yet, but at the same time it's hard not to think back to last season.
In week two last year, Jones went down with a right ankle injury that turned out to be a high ankle sprain. He ended up missing seven of the next eight games and really didn't get back to full strength until the final few weeks of the Colts' season. In essence, his first year with the team was lost due to him struggling through the injury. That's why, when we see Jones suffer an ankle injury tonight, many are concerned.
Let's hold off on freaking out yet, but Art Jones is a player the Colts cannot afford to lose. He will need to be a huge part of their defense and their run game, and it would be a huge loss if he is out for any period of time. Hopefully, the Colts' injury luck continues and Jones' injury isn't bad. But all we know so far is that it's a left ankle injury and he's out for the rest of the game (which doesn't mean anything since it's preseason).
UPDATE: According to Colts.com's Steve Andress, Arthur Jones has now been carted back to the locker room with the ankle injury.
