Colts inactives vs. Bills includes Robert Mathis, Greg Toler

Here are the Colts' inactives for today's game against the Bills.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

We're just about an hour away from kickoff of the Indianapolis Colts' regular season opener, as they are in Buffalo to take on the Bills at 1:00 p.m. ET.  While the attention will be on the field and those players who are active today, it's also notable to look at those players who won't play, a list that includes a couple of notable names for the Colts.

Here are today's inactives for Indy:

Vick Ballard, RB (hamstring)

Greg Toler, CB (neck)

D'Joun Smith, CB (knee)

Hugh Thornton, OL (knee)

Denzelle Good, OL

Robert Mathis, OLB (Achilles)

Billy Winn, DL

A few notes:

  • The most notable inactive, of course, is Robert Mathis, who was a game time decision in his return from an Achilles injury.  He was working out on the field pregame but the Colts made the decision not to play him today, likely meaning his return could be next Monday night at Lucas Oil Stadium against the Jets.  This way, at least, the Colts kept the Bills wondering whether Mathis would play, though it's unlikely he would have made a huge impact either way.
  • As we knew earlier this week, Greg Toler and Vick Ballard are both inactive.  Neither are surprises.
  • With Toler and D'Joun Smith both out, however, that means that two of the top four corners are out for the Colts today.  Vontae Davis and Darius Butler will start, while it's likely that Jalil Brown will fill in as the number three corner with Sheldon Price also available to contribute.
  • The newly acquired Billy Winn, who the Colts traded for on Friday against the Browns, is inactive today, which shouldn't be a surprise.  Sio Moore and T.Y. McGill, both of whom were brought to Indy last weekend, are both active.

Here are the Bills' inactives:

EJ Manuel, QB

Bryce Brown, RB

Tony Steward, ILB

Gabe Ikard, OL

Marquise Goodwin, WR

Chris Gragg, TE

Andre Fluellen, DT
