Colts week one snap counts vs. Bills

Taking a look at the snap counts for the Colts offense, defense, and special teams from week one against the Bills.

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

The Indianapolis Colts opened their 2015 regular season on Sunday with a sour note, losing 27-13 to the Buffalo Bills on the road.  The team fell to 0-1 on the season, but it's still early.  They will have time to turn it around, but the first game was certainly a disappointment.  Let's take a look at the snap counts for the offense, defense, and special teams on Sunday:

Offense:

Player Pos. Snaps Percent
Lance Louis G 77 100%
Jack Mewhort T 77 100%
Khaled Holmes C 77 100%
Anthony Castonzo T 77 100%
Andrew Luck QB 77 100%
Todd Herremans G 76 99%
Andre Johnson WR 63 82%
Donte Moncrief WR 57 74%
Dwayne Allen TE 52 68%
T.Y. Hilton WR 52 68%
Coby Fleener TE 37 48%
Frank Gore RB 33 43%
Tyler Varga RB 23 30%
Josh Robinson RB 21 27%
Phillip Dorsett WR 17 22%
Jack Doyle TE 15 19%
Griff Whalen WR 8 10%
Joe Reitz G 8 10%

A few notes:

  • The most common formation usage by the Colts' offense on Sunday was 11 personnel, which is one running back and one tight end along with three receivers, and those players that made up that formation were T.Y. Hilton, Andre Johnson, Donte Moncrief, Dwayne Allen, and Frank Gore.  That was the most common personnel grouping for the Colts, and that's the right group to have out there often as well.
  • Tyler Varga played more snaps than Josh Robinson, and Varga impressed during those snaps as well.  If he continues to play well, he could continue to see even more time.
  • The Colts used six offensive linemen on several snaps (with Joe Reitz), which was likely prompted by the Bills' furious blitzing and the Colts going to max protection at times.

Defense:

Player Pos. Snaps Percent
Mike Adams SS 59 100%
Erik Walden LB 59 100%
Jerrell Freeman LB 58 98%
Vontae Davis CB 58 98%

Bjoern Werner LB 3 5%
Earl Okine DE 3 5%
T.Y. McGill DT 3 5%
Colt Anderson SS 1 2%
Nate Irving LB 1 2%

A few notes:

  • In their first career NFL games, Henry Anderson played 86% of the snaps and David Parry played 56% of the snaps.  Rookie Clayton Geathers played 19% of the snaps.
  • T.Y. McGill, who the Colts claimed off of waivers from the Seahawks a week before the opener, got in the game for three snaps.

  • Sio Moore, who the Colts traded for a week ago, didn't play at all on the defensive side of the football but was in on 18 special teams snaps.
