We've been waiting all day for some news on Chuck Pagano's future with the Indianapolis Colts, and it turns out that we'll have to wait a little longer. Colts PR has announced that the Colts will not hold a press conference tonight and that no announcement will be coming tonight on Pagano's status with the team, as Pagano and owner Jim Irsay are still meeting.
The Colts will send out an update on Tuesday morning, so hopefully by that time there will be a decision made. For now, however, Pagano and Irsay are still meeting and, therefore, we will have to wait longer to find out Pagano's status with the team.
This certainly qualifies as a surprise, as it has long been expected that Pagano will be fired on Monday. The decision, supposedly, had been pretty set for a few weeks, with the only real question being Ryan Grigson's future with the team. Chuck Pagano and Jim Irsay were set to meet mid-afternoon today, and it was thought that it wouldn't have to be an entirely long conversation. As of right now, however, the meeting is still ongoing.
So what does all of this mean? Nobody knows, but it certainly makes it less of a certainty that Chuck Pagano will be fired. If Jim Irsay had already made a decision, this would have been quick. But the fact that the two are still meeting likely means that Pagano is fighting for his job and trying to sell Irsay on himself as the team's head coach. We really don't have any information or insight into what the decision will be, but it's certainly very curious that this is taking so long. Could it possibly be that Chuck Pagano could stick around against all odds? It's still probably not likely, but the wait seems to indicate that Irsay's decision hasn't been made yet. Last week, Pagano said that, "I will fight my ass off to be the coach here," and perhaps that's really what he's doing. The bottom line, however, is that we don't know, so we'll stay tuned and do it all again tomorrow.
