In the crazy division that is the AFC South, the Indianapolis Colts are still very much alive despite a 3-4 record.
In fact, in just one week they improved from fourth place in the division to second place. The Houston Texans haven’t played yet (they face the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football), but no matter what they’ll remain in first place this week (they’re currently 4-2). Then after that, the Colts and the Tennessee Titans have identical 3-4 records, but the Colts own the tiebreaker thanks to their head-to-head win over the Titans today. And then in last place is the 2-4 Jacksonville Jaguars, who suffered another loss today to the Oakland Raiders.
- Houston Texans (4-2)
- Indianapolis Colts (3-4)
- Tennessee Titans (3-4)
- Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4)
So in other words, the Colts went from last place to second place in the division with just one win. And with nine games still left in the season and home games against each division opponent still remaining, the Colts still have a very real chance of winning the division. It absolutely won’t be easy, however, as the Colts have already completed the ‘easy’ part of their schedule and haven’t looked particularly good this year overall. In fact, they have arguably the worst defense in football. So there are a ton of issues with this team, but their season isn’t anywhere near done yet.
We knew how crazy the AFC South was after last week’s game, as the Colts could have been in first with a win and dropped to last with a loss. So the division is still there for anyone’s taking, and with Andrew Luck playing at a high level the Colts figure to have a chance. But in order to actually win the division, the team will have to start playing better than they have been. The good news, though, is that despite their struggles so far they’re still very much in the mix.
As many people like to say, the AFC South is just the gift that keeps on giving.
