The Indianapolis Colts today made a minor roster move, as they waived wide receiver Tevaun Smith from the active roster.
Smith was originally signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa this offseason, and he really impressed throughout the offseason program, training camp, and preseason. Chester Rogers won the battle for the final receiver spot over Smith out of preseason, however, so Smith was signed to the practice squad. He spent the first six weeks of the year on Indy’s practice squad before then being signed to the active roster as a result of injuries.
This move isn’t too surprising since the other receivers are now healthy. T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, Chester Rogers, and Devin Street are all ahead of Smith on the depth chart at the position, so he was likely going to be a gameday inactive moving forward anyway (like he was last week against the Packers). It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Colts sign him back to their practice squad once (if) he clears waivers, and this move opens up a spot on the 53-man roster for Indianapolis as well.
