Colts sign wide receiver Marcus Leak to active roster

NFL: Indianapolis Colts-Training Camp USA TODAY Sports

The Indianapolis Colts made a very interesting roster move tonight, promoting wide receiver Marcus Leak from the practice squad to the active roster.

The move comes just a few hours after the Colts waived receiver Tevaun Smith, meaning that the Colts just swapped wideouts as they’re heading into their bye week. That’s a very curious and interesting move, particularly since Smith had a good preseason, was on the practice squad for the first several weeks of the season, and then has been on the active roster for a few weeks. Leak, meanwhile, was waived on August 22 and was just recently signed to the practice squad on October 18. He had a solid training camp when he was actually on the field (he dealt with some injuries).

But this move is interesting because when the team waived Smith it was understood as a move that was simply clearing a spot at receiver with everyone healthy - and then the Colts wound up signing a different receiver to replace Smith. Marcus Leak figures to be behind T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, Chester Rogers, and Devin Street on the depth chart (at least initially), so he likely will be a gameday inactive.
