The Colts are eliminated from playoff contention, meaning that fans have already turned their attention toward next year and how to improve the team.
While most of that talk centers around one area (firing Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano), some fans have also begun to look at potential free agents and draft picks for the team. We’ll have complete coverage of all of that stuff in the coming weeks, so stay tuned, but let’s take a look at the projected draft spot for the Colts with one week left.
Currently, the Colts would be picking 13th in the 2017 NFL Draft, but that can change a few spots either way depending on what they do next week as well as what other teams do. The Colts are 7-8 right now, so with a loss there’s a chance they could creep into the top ten, but with a win they could creep closer to the playoff teams instead in terms of draft order. It looks like the range for the Colts in the draft could still fall anywhere from the 9th pick to the 19th pick, but it will most likely be in the middle, so the Colts will be picking somewhere around 13th in the upcoming draft, give or take a few spots.
There are plenty of needs for the Colts, but the biggest areas of need lie on the defensive side of the football, and in particular in regards to linebackers. The good news for Indianapolis is that there a number of good players at the position in this year’s draft, particularly when it comes to edge rushers. Those guys are a rare commodity in the NFL so could be grabbed quickly, but hopefully the Colts are high enough to be able to take a legitimate edge rusher to be able to help their woes.
Either way, the Colts should likely have the highest pick they’ll have had since 2012, and they’ll have the luxury of not needing a quarterback, as several teams drafting ahead of them do need someone at that position. It will be interesting to see how the draft shapes up and we’ll have plenty of time to talk about the draft between now and then, but with one week left the Colts are currently projected to pick 13th.
