Report: Colts have taken a "close look" at South Carolina tight end Jerell Adams

We've heard several reports of the Colts' interest in certain draft prospects, but today we actually got a report from an Indianapolis reporter about another one of those prospects.  According to the Indianapolis Star's Stephen Holder, the Colts "have taken a close look" at South Carolina tight end Jerell Adams.

Adams (6-6, 231 pounds) played in 47 games during his career at South Carolina (starting 15) and recorded 66 receptions for 977 yards and seven scores, averaging 14.8 yards per catch.  He was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2012, while he later was named a two-time SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.  In his senior season in 2015, he set career highs with 28 catches, 421 yards, and three touchdowns.  CBS Sports projects him to be a third or fourth round draft pick.

The Colts have shown some interest in tight ends throughout the draft process, such as Arkansas State's Darion Griswold, who they spent "significant time" with yesterday at his pro day.  It makes sense for the Colts to be looking into tight end options, as they lost Coby Fleener in free agency.  They opted to re-sign Dwayne Allen instead, but it does leave them with less players at the position.  Jack Doyle will almost certainly be back, but after Allen and Doyle the Colts don't have much at all.  Someone like Erik Swoope or Cameron Clear or Mike McFarland could compete for the third tight end spot, but none of them would prevent the Colts from adding another option in the draft.  According to Stephen Holder, the Colts seem to like South Carolina's Jerell Adams, so he's a player to be keeping an eye on as we approach the draft.  Holder also noted that the Colts have looked at Adams "among others" at the tight end position, so it does sound like the Colts have interest in adding to their tight end position through the draft this year.  Whether or not they actually do, however, remains to be seen.
