A week ago, we listed five undrafted free agents that Colts fans should keep an eye on, as there's always one or two that wind up making the final 53-man roster.
Included on that list were Illinois running back Josh Ferguson and Arkansas State tight end Darion Griswold, and ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. seems to think highly of both players as well. Kiper recently wrote an article listing the top 30 undrafted free agents to watch around the NFL, and those two Colts made the list (which wasn't in any particular order).
Regarding Griswold, Kiper wrote:
Brings a basketball skill set and length to the position, and the TE options are just OK here after Dwayne Allen.
And regarding Ferguson, Kiper had this to say:
He has sub-4.5 speed and can flat out make people miss; he'll turn a little space into big plays.
Both players are certainly ones worth keeping an eye on, due both to their talent and the Colts' needs at those positions. The Colts absolutely need a running back behind Frank Gore, and Josh Ferguson has a chance to not only make the roster but even perhaps handle the number two running back duties. At tight end, the Colts have Dwayne Allen and Jack Doyle, but they could really use a third tight end. The competition for that spot is wide open, and Darion Griswold could potentially emerge as the winner.
Neither players are certain to make the roster, but that's always the case with undrafted free agents. The bottom line, however, is that both Josh Ferguson and Darion Griswold (among others, like Ron Thompson and Curt Maggitt) are talented players who could carve out a role with the Colts based on the need at both positions.
The Colts' undrafted free agent class looks like a very good one at first glance, and there are several players who could perhaps make a strong push in training camp and preseason to make the roster. Josh Ferguson and Darion Griswold are two of them and two that Mel Kiper Jr. really likes, but they aren't the only ones by any means.
