From a depth chart perspective, the defensive line looks to be a very good group for the Indianapolis Colts in 2016. A lot of that, however, is dependent upon health. Can Henry Anderson and Art Jones get and stay healthy?
The expectation for both players is yes. And while the Colts have had to play without Jones for most of the past two years, they saw what Anderson can do last year - and that is to be arguably their best defensive player. Owner Jim Irsay even referred to Anderson and Andrew Luck as the Colts' two best players earlier this offseason. Clearly, a lot of attention will be on Anderson and his health in training camp and preseason as people await his return.
Irsay spoke to the media tonight at the Colts' open practice and mentioned that it's "no guarantee" that Anderson is ready for week one, according to the Indianapolis Star's Zak Keefer. The Colts will open the 2016 season at home on September 11 against the Detroit Lions, though it's uncertain whether Anderson will be back by that time.
What this means is that he's likely to begin training camp on the PUP list, where he could remain for a while. We've never really heard a firm deadline for Anderson's return from the team or from Anderson, so Irsay's comments are the first we've heard. So it's possible the Colts could be opening up the season without one of their best players, but the most important thing is for him to get fully healthy so that he can produce whenever he does return.
