Colts now without seven cornerbacks as Darius Butler leaves with ankle injury

NFL: Preseason-Philadelphia Eagles at Indianapolis Colts Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

As if the Indianapolis Colts weren’t thin enough at cornerback already, we can add another name to the long list of corners not playing tonight. Darius Butler left the game early with an ankle injury and will not return. According to FOX59’s Mike Chappell, Butler is sitting on the sideline with a wrap on his left ankle.

Butler made an impact in the few snaps he did play, as he recorded an interception off of a tipped ball on the Eagles’ first drive that led to a field goal for the Colts. He got the start tonight alongside Tay Glover-Wright due to the injuries at the position.

Normal starters Vontae Davis and Patrick Robinson are both out with injuries tonight, while D’Joun Smith, Jalil Brown, and Tevin Mitchel are also out with injuries. Newly-signed Antonio Cromartie also isn’t playing tonight. So with Butler now out with an ankle, that brings the number of cornerbacks out tonight up to seven.

Obviously, with preseason injuries we can’t really make a determination of severity during the game. Just because a player won’t return to a preseason game doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t return in a regular season game or that it’s a serious injury, but rather simply that they’re being cautious. But it will be very interesting to get an update on Butler, as the team is very thin at the position.
