Analysis

Harvey-Clemons is a huge versatile safety who can end up playing Strong or Free safety on the next level. Barring any new off-field concerns, he seems like a safe pick. He may never see a Pro-Bowl, but teams longing for solid safety play could do much worse than Harvey-Clemons.

Pros

  • Solid production– In 2015, he had 88 tackles and 3 interceptions. If he can repeat this effort, he’s going to rise up draft boards, quickly.
  • Solid Tackler – Especially in open field, he’ll breakdown and wrap up the legs of the ball carrier. He doesn’t always go for the highlight hit, but he rarely misses; and that’s what I want in the Colts FS.
  • Great Blitz from Secondary – He picks his gaps well to avoid O-linemen and RB blocks, and is effective in at least disturbing the QB
  • Smart with Hands – He is very slick in the situations where he could be called for PI or Holding. He may give the WR a quick grab on their outside shoulder right before they start to go for the ball (before the refs are actively looking for it). While he may get called at the next level, I think he does it slickly.

Cons

  • Off-Field Issues in the Past? – He was dismissed from Georgia for violations of team rules and had marijuana issues in the past. He had a clean 2015 so hopefully the issues leading to his dismissal are in the the past.
  • Not Quick - He almost looks slow when flipping hips but he’s often able to recover (vs. college players). This will be an issue with NFL quick-twitch slot WRs and speedy TEs.
  • Caught Looking – His aggression sometimes gets the best of him on play-action (but there’s few college safeties you can’t say that about).
  • Draft Traits – Not a personal negative, but his size is probably going to intrigue enough scouts that you’re to have to reach for him earlier than he probably should go, if he has similar production to last year.
