According to his agent, Enter Sports Management, running back Brandon Wegher is working out for the Indianapolis Colts today.
After being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Carolina Panthers last offseason out of Morningside College, Wegher impressed enough to make Carolina’s active roster. He stayed there all season, though he was inactive in 15 regular season games as well as the three postseason games. He did appear in one regular season game, however, but didn’t record any statistics. This preseason, he played in all four games for the Panthers and recorded 83 yards rushing on 32 carries (averaging 2.6 yards per rush) and caught three passes for seven yards. He was cut as a part of the final roster cutdowns and is currently a free agent.
As I’m sure many fans will be very quick to point out, the running back position isn’t at the top of the Colts’ list of needs, but general manager Ryan Grigson is just keeping up with different options at all of the positions, not just at the positions of need (like cornerback). Behind Frank Gore, the team currently has Robert Turbin, Josh Ferguson, and Jordan Todman, though some of those spots aren’t secure and could be up for grabs depending on how Wegher does in his workout. It’s also possible (and maybe likely) that this is a workout simply geared toward keeping tabs on guys, which happens all the time in the NFL.
