Colts sign eight players to reserve/future contracts, including Stephen Morris and Tevaun Smith

While we’re waiting for any word on potential changes with the Colts’ leadership, the team has signed seven players to reserve/future contracts: outside linebacker Lavar Edwards, wide receiver Marcus Leak, safety Stefan McClure, cornerback Tevin Mitchel, quarterback Stephen Morris, guard Adam Redmond and wide receiver Tevaun Smith.

A little bit later today, the Colts also signed cornerback Larry Scott to a reserve/future contract, bringing the total to eight players signed so far.

Because the Colts aren’t in the playoffs and because the new league year hasn’t started yet, the Colts can’t sign guys to their active roster yet. So all they can do is sign guys not currently on the roster to reserve/future contracts, which means that they will have a spot on the roster once the rosters expand to the 90-man offseason rosters.

These seven players who were initially signed to reserve/future deals by the Colts today all finished the season on the practice squad, so it’s no surprise to see them given deals. Tackle Pierce Burton, guard Kitt O’Brien, and defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles are other players who finished the year on the practice squad, though they haven’t been signed to reserve/future deals yet.

Stephen Morris has been the Colts’ number three quarterback and had an impressive preseason this year, spending a bit of time on the active roster too. Lavar Edwards was claimed off of waivers from the Panthers and played in five games with the Colts this year, recording four tackles and a sack. Tevin Mitchel has been an interesting name to keep an eye on at cornerback, but he was placed on IR after the preseason, waived from IR with an injury settlement, and then spent the final nine weeks of the season on Indy’s practice squad. Tevaun Smith and Marcus Leak were both intriguing undrafted free agents with the Colts in camp, and both spent brief stints on the active roster this year. Stefan McClure was signed as an undrafted free agent last year, was waived during final roster cuts, and spent the last four weeks of the season on Indy’s practice squad. And Adam Redmond was also waived during final roster cuts and spent most of the season on the Colts’ practice squad.

As for Larry Scott, he originally was signed by the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State last year, and he was with the team in the offseason, training camp, and preseason before he was waived as a part of final roster cuts. The Colts signed him to a reserve/future deal late this afternoon.
