Ever since the regular season ended, Colts fans have been awaiting word on the status of head coach Chuck Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson. Thus far? Silence.
Sure, Jim Irsay tweeted a congratulations to Robert Mathis yesterday morning and also announced Andrew Luck’s shoulder surgery as well, but there has been complete silence from the owner in regards to the men leading his team. Fans haven’t been completely in the dark, though, as reports surfaced that Irsay was going after Peyton Manning to head the Colts’ football operations and Jon Gruden to coach the team. Those deals fell through, so what next?
It may just be business for usual, and the silence may just be because if Irsay says something now it will confirm that he has been looking at his options the past few weeks. But whatever the case, it doesn’t seem that the Colts’ players have any more clarity than fans do. The Indianapolis Star’s Zak Keefer tweeted last night about a player who told him earlier this week that, “I’m completely in the dark about what’s happening.”
So what does that mean? Well, there are a few options. The first option is that a decision has been made but that the players haven’t been notified yet. In this case, it would be just staying silent with everyone to pretend like there was never a question, not making an announcement to the players just like they wouldn’t make an announcement to the fans. Another option is that since this player told Keefer that he didn’t know what’s going on (which was earlier this week), the players have been notified. This is possible, but you’d have thought we’d at least hear something about it. The third option is that this means that Jim Irsay is still exploring his options for a new coach and that a decision hasn’t really been made, which would explain why the players don’t know yet.
But which one of those options is it? We don’t know yet - and it sounds like the players don’t either.
