The Indianapolis Colts have put together a list of six people that they will interview for their general manager opening, and it’s a very strong list filled with some of the league’s most-respected personnel guys.
The list includes the likes of Chris Ballard, the director of football operations for the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s one of the top personnel guys in the NFL, and he’s been sought-after for other jobs. He was reportedly the top choice for the San Francisco 49ers, but he wound up not interviewing with them.
But the Colts, a team with a franchise quarterback already in place in Andrew Luck, will get the opportunity to talk with him. And according to the MMQB’s Albert Breer, the sense he’s getting is that Ballard is the “candidate that most intrigues” the Colts about their GM opening. Breer said the key is that Ballard is “connected, [and] would assemble a robust staff.”
This will surely make a lot of Colts fans happy, because Chris Ballard is a very well-regarded guy who would be a tremendous hire for the Colts. It’s unknown whether he will be offered the job or whether he would take it, but the fact that he’s interviewing with the team is a good sign. Plus, it sounds like the Colts do indeed have quite a bit of interest in Ballard, and for good reason: he’s done very good work in Kansas City in recent years.
Of the six people on the Colts’ list, there isn’t a bad option. Every person on the list is respected, knows what he’s doing, and has experience. So it’s not like the Colts are going to make a bad choice, but it’s quite possible Chris Ballard would be the best choice.
