Another week of football, another mixed bag on the Thursday injury report. As was announced yesterday, Andrew Luck sat out of practice to spend time with the training staff. Of course, some veterans earned a rest day like Jack Mewhort and Frank Gore.
Matthias Farley, Quincy Wilson, Marlon Mack, Anthony Walker, Chris Milton, and Ryan Kelly full participants
It is very positive for the Colts safety rotation that Farley simply took a day to rest his quad on Monday. He missed practice last Friday as well but played against the Seahawks and did not appear to be limited in the game. Barring any setbacks, he will be ready to take the field on Sunday.
The Colts already announced that center Ryan Kelly will make his season debut this weekend. It is great that he has maintained full participation in consecutive practices. His presence on the line should help the unit make some noticeable improvements, particularly in helping Frank Gore find some running room against his former team.
Another player that Kelly could help break free on the ground is Marlon Mack who was a full participant in practice today. Having a full compliment of running backs can do nothing but help Jacoby Brissett feel more comfortable with his options on offense. Fans have been waiting to see if Mack can offer some firepower as a change of pace to Gore and this weekend they might get a chance to find out.
Rookie Anthony Walker and defensive back Chris Milton were all full participants for a second consecutive practice and should be ready to suit up this weekend.
Chester Rogers and Jack Doyle limited participants
On queue, Chester Rogers returned to practice on a limited basis today. This should allow him to ease his way back into game action. If I had to guess, he’ll likely sit out again this weekend and use practice next week to get full speed reps prior to getting worked back into the wide receiver rotation.
Jack Doyle practiced on a limited basis for a second consecutive day, still listed with a concussion and also with a neck injury. There is a very strong chance the Doyle will play this weekend barring a setback with his concussion but full participation on Friday should be the best indication of his outlook.
Nate Hairston, Rashaan Melvin, and Matt Jones all did not participate
Time is running out on Nate Hairston and Rashaan Melvin if they plan to suit up this weekend. I would imagine that it would take full participation in practice on Friday for the front office to let them go on Sunday. If they are unable to go, Wilson likely will line up across from Vontae Davis. Who fills the nickel role is less certain.
Matt Jones makes his first appearance on the injury list this week. Fourth string running backs cannot afford to be here for very long. Let’s hope the knee injury is nothing serious and that he was simply given his own veteran rest day.
As I mentioned previously, Frank Gore, Jack Mewhort, and Andrew Luck all did not participate but none were expected to so there is little to report. Mewhort and Gore will play this weekend and Luck definitely will not.
