The Colts officially ended training camp following Thursday’s morning’s practice and will now head into Preseason Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. Fans should expect the first team offense and defense to get more work this week, likely playing for about a quarter or maybe a little more if past history has been any indicator.
The Colts will still be without a number of players due to varying injuries: QB Andrew Luck (shoulder), C Ryan Kelly (foot), C/G Brian Schwenke, G Denzelle Good, TE Erik Swoope (knee), WR Donte Moncrief (shoulder), WR Chester Rogers (hamstring), S Clayton Geathers (neck), and S Malik Hooker (shoulder) among other starters who might use the day to rest. As we learn more we will update this list.
The biggest initial stories for the Colts entering the game is the opportunity to get a first look at rookie running back Marlon Mack. While it is unknown how many repetitions he will get with the first team tonight, it is assumed that he will get his first work. Additionally, TJ Green is expected to work at cornerback for the first time against the Cowboys. After two days of practice at the position, seeing how he manages during live reps against an unfamiliar opponent will let fans get some idea of how far he has to go.
With Johnathan Hankins taking the first for the first time as a Colt, this is the first opportunity to get a look at how the projected started defensive line will look in the regular season. They will have a tough test ahead of them with one of the strongest offensive lines in the NFL lining up across from them. Fans may also get the first look at the presumed starting inside linebacker combination of Jon Bostic and Antonio Morrison. These two will join the starting front seven against a team that likes to pound the ball and will have an opportunity to make an early statement.
It is also worth noting that Donte Moncrief and Chester Rogers will likely not be taking the field for tonight’s game. That leaves room for Kamar Aiken to show something and for Phillip Dorsett to make the most of his opportunity as well. It also means even more reps for Bug Howard and Jo Jo Natson, who have been trying to stake their claims for a spot on the 53-man roster.
