Head Coach Chuck Pagano announced on Monday that Andrew Luck has been ruled out for for the week 3 tilt against the Cleveland Browns. He stopped short of ruling him out from a return to practice and said the team is waiting on Luck to be cleared by his doctors. No indication was given with regard to a timetable except that Pagano did indicate that he has no doubt Luck will return to the field this season.
There you have it folks. The timetable is somewhere between week 4 and week 17. No further questions.
On the other side of the ball, the Colts run of luck from the misfortune of its opponents continues as 2017 first overall pick Myles Garrett will likely sit for a third straight week. Garrett was spotted in a walking boot in the locker room on Monday. This could be precautionary but it certainly doesn’t look good for his chances.
There also has been some shuffling at the bottom of the roster due to some changes in relative health over the weekend. The Colts announced that they have waived inside linebacker Darnell Sankey and re-signed wide receiver Matt Hazel to the active roster. The Hazel signing coincides with the news that Chester Rogers suffered a setback and will get an MRI. Don’t expect Ryan Kelly or Vontae Davis back against the Browns either as both still are week-to-week.
The fact that the Colts still will be without three of the team’s best players might help explain why the Browns are favored by 2.5 points ahead of Sunday’s game. This is the same Browns team that is 0-2 and the same Browns team that has lost 20 out of their last 21 games.
There truly is no place to go from here but up. Right?
Also, if you’re looking for a silver lining, the Colts are only one game back from being tied for first in the AFC South. If you’re looking for doom and gloom, they’re alone in last place as every other team in the division has a win. Back to silver linings?
Fine ... the Titans play the Seahawks, the Texans play the Patriots, and the Jaguars play the Ravens. There is a very real possibility that all three of the other AFC South teams could lose in Week 3 — meaning a win for the Colts puts them inexplicably in a four-way tie for first place.
Before anyone gets too excited, please keep in mind that the Colts best player still is not practicing.
