Myth of Draft position and reasons to root for the Colts this season

Let me start by saying we are still in this. The Colts are two games behind the Jags and we still play the Jags twice. There is not a team in the league the Colts cannot beat on any given Sunday. They have not been able to win games but they have the skill when healthy and the Andrew Luck factor to be able to win any game. The Colts could sweep the Jags and be in the driver seat for this division. Do I think it will happen, probably not but it is reasonably doable. Even if the colts were to drop a few games and get kicked out of playoff contention we should not give up rooting for this team. We are young we need to start winning football games and get out of this funk. Coach Reich talked about "the funk" he even attributed the drops to it. This team needs to get healthy and confident. I think we have a lot of the pieces to win, we are competitive almost every week, we just need to bring it all together. Being competitive, winning games, and building that momentum is more important than a few spots higher in the draft. Draft position does not mean automatic success. If we scout well there are going to be plenty of solid options in the middle of the draft compared to the top 5 picks. Take this year, for example, look at the top 5 defensive rookies of the year candidates from CBS released yesterday.

1- the maniac himself Leonard taken 36th

2- Denzel ward taken fourth overall

3- Derwin James taken 16th overall

4- Edumunds taken 17th overal;

5- Donte Jackson taken 55th overall

The mean draft spot for defensive rookie of the year is 25.5 take out the two largest discrepancies the new mean is 23. Noticeably Chubb considered by most to be the top defender the guy most Colts fans wanted to take in the top 5 is not on the list. Not to say he is a bust he just had a monster game with 3 sacks but has been otherwise fairly quiet this season. Even if the list changes I would argue 15-18 is the optimal position in this draft. What does this mean? I am not proposing that statistically, you're chances for finding a successful player don't go up the higher you draft. What I am proposing is that the advantage of a few positions higher in the draft is not worth losing football games for. We need to scout well and draft the best player at our spot. What that means to Colts fans is there is a reason to root for this team no matter how bleak things become every win is a step in the right direction, a step to building the culture we want. I think winning and how we play these upcoming games are going to be really important moving forward. Only one team is going to win the Superbowl for everyone else it's about getting better and winning football games. Plus to put it simply it is just more fun to watch football with something to root for.
