On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts announced that they waived running back Matt Jones, wide receiver Justice Liggins, defensive end Arthur Miley, defensive/nose tackle Joey Mbu and linebackers Jermaine Grace and Darnell Sankey. They also waived-injured defensive tackle Johnathan Calvin, who will revert to the Colts’ Injured Reserve list if he clears waivers.
None of these moves are all that surprising, as all of the positions affected had players drafted to them over the weekend. The Colts also have about a dozen undrafted free agents coming in, although they have not officially announced those signings yet.
Among the players who were let go today, they combined to appear in 24 games with the Colts in 2017 (no starts), primarily on special teams.
The most notable player to be waived was Jones, who was the Washington Redskins’ starting running back as recently as 2016. He had a very subtle role with the Colts, only carrying the ball five times last year in his five games. General manager Chris Ballard has mentioned Jones specifically multiple times since Jones’ arrival, which led us to believe he may make his way onto the 2018 regular season roster. However, the Colts drafted two running backs last week — Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins.
We will keep you updated on further roster moves, as they are likely to come soon.
