Colts Cast: Breaking Down the Colts by Position | Cornerback

New, comment

A position heavily discussed this offseason, the Colts cornerback position will be one to watch closely as training camp inches closer.

Is there another position on the Indianapolis Colts roster with more to prove? Possibly, but after being given a major vote of confidence — with no 2018 draft picks added to the position — by second-year GM, Chris Ballard, this group has some extremely high expectations internally.

The Colts instead decided to put the group they ended the 2017 season with, on the field in 2018 while adding some undrafted rookies to the unit.

Like several positions on this roster, there are rookies who have real opportunities to get some quality snaps as the season progresses and there are several here as well. Henre Toliver, Lashard Durr, Robert Jackson and Juante Baldwin will be battling a familiar group for that playing time and will be a young collection to watch very closely.

D.J. White has a bit of a leg up on them being that he was brought in — off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs — last season in order to improve the depth and prepare for this season’s changes in the secondary. Christopher Milton doesn’t have the luxury of coming in under the new regime, but he does have some expectations he’ll need to live up to which exceeds his familiarity with the team.

Nate Hairston far exceeded his draft value last season, but where does he line up this season? Can Quincy Wilson build off of his experience from last season and lead this unit towards some serious improvement?

Is Pierre Desir the other guy on the boundary? The Colts new scheme seems to be a nice fit for him as he, too, is familiar to it and likely expected to excel attacking the ball. Ballard likes his instincts and we know that that’s a major point of interest for him and this roster.

One of the corners who could take many by surprise throughout the season is Kenny Moore. Don’t confuse his small stature with a lack of fit for the incoming scheme. He proved that he’s plenty physical for it and has the ability to cover along the boundary as much as any in the unit.

There’s a lot of questions with this group, but also some critical familiarity despite being such a young crew that most aren’t cognizant of nationally.
