It looks as though the Colts will be adding some depth to their safety group. Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport are reporting that the Colts will sign Shamarko Thomas, who visited the team today. They waived CB Juante Baldwin in order to make room on the roster for Thomas. Given that their starting safeties are currently on the active/PUP list, this didn’t come as a major surprise.
At 27 years old, Thomas offers some veteran presence in a very young secondary group. He has played in 60 games in his career, but has struggled with various injuries throughout. He has been valuable as a special teams contributor as the gunner, and that would make him valuable as a backup even after the return of Clayton Geathers and Malik Hooker to full participation.
The addition of a valuable special teamer while also filling out depth is definitely a positive thing. While many were hoping that Tre Boston, Kenny Vaccaro, or Eric Reid might be brought in, it is possible that this could be a sign that the health outlook for both of the Colts starters is such that Ballard believes it unnecessary to add one of these players.
The question now is whether this impacts T.J. Green’s spot on the roster. As an experienced player who also has decent speed working for him, the addition of Thomas could make Green the odd man out when final cuts arrive. Green was already under immense pressure to have a great camp, and it will only ratchet up from here.
