1-2 is not bad

I hate that the Colts lost to the Bengals. They had the game in their hands, and they were playing well enough to get the winning TD. But they loss to the Eagles on the road was not a game I ever thought the Colts SHOULD win.

The bright side is still pretty bright. The Colts play a winless Houston team in a week, then turn and play the Patriots on the short week, in the TNF game. And quite likely, they lose on the road to the Super Bowl losers from last year. I thnk it is quite likely the Colts move to 2-3 thru the 5-week mark.

The Colts season could well hinge on the 3 games after that:

At the New York Jets (currently 1-2)

Home against the Buffalo Bills (currently 0-3)

At the Miami Dolphins (currently 3-0)

I am unimpressed with those 3 teams. The Dolphins have unconvincing wins over Tennessee, NY Jets, and Oakland. The Raiders have no wins. The Jets ... well they just lost to Cleveland, the first team to do that in a LOOOOONG time.

The Eagles game was a bitter one. The Colts lost a game that the Eagles tried to gift ... wrapped up and with a bow on it. And they looked bad while losing to a team trying to give it away.

The biggest takeaway should be that the Colts were close, not that they lost. And with Jack Doyle in there ... they might have won that game. With Anthony Castonzo and Robert Turbin ... they might have moved the ball on the ground. I think the game showed that the Colts defense can be pretty solid.

This season still should see the Colts get better as the season goes on. They are young, and the coaches are brand new. The players and coaches will learn, and get better. The team has a very good chance at being 5-3 at the mid-season bye week. If they improve their play enough thru those games, then they should be able to compete for the division. And if they are still a bit unpolished, they should still compete for a wild-card playoff spot.

I'll happily take that. Maybe they grow enough to make some noise in the playoffs. Maybe they fight their way in, and then get sent packing by a more experienced team (on the road). I wish the Colts had opened with a win over the Bengals. 2-1 would be fantastic right now. I don't feel that the Colts under-achieved all that much today. The offense played like shit. That happens. When it does happen, it is tough to win.
