The Indianapolis Colts sit at 5-3 and are right in the running for the playoffs halfway through this 2019 season. While they are coming off a disappointing loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, let’s look at the positives of this season in today’s article. For today’s midseason piece, I have put together the best overall plays of the midseason for the Colts. So sit back and enjoy some excellent plays by the 2019 Indianapolis Colts.
Best Pass: Jacoby Brissett vs the Broncos
Potentially the most important play of the season was this remarkable play by Brissett against the Denver Broncos. With the Colts down to their last drive, their starting quarterback came up clutch with a huge play. He takes the snap in his own endzone before having both Von Miller and Derek Wolfe breathing down his neck. He is able to fight through those two defenders before rolling out to his right. He then launches a perfect pass down the field to TY Hilton who makes an impressive catch of his own. Excellent all around play and one of the top plays of Brissett’s young career.
Best Run: Marlon Mack vs the Chiefs
How good has Marlon Mack been this season? A player once thought as a rotational back now appears to be one of the best young running backs in the NFL. His much improved patience and vision are showcased perfectly on this play. He stops his feet at the line of scrimmage while attempting to locate a running lane. He then jump cuts around his blockers before exploding up the gut for the huge gain. This play right sums up Mack’s excellent career development while also showing that he can dominate on a National stage against one of the league’s better teams.
Best Catch: Eric Ebron vs the Texans
Despite having a quiet season in 2019, Ebron made one of the best catches of the entire year against the Houston Texans. Third and short near the goal line, the Colts leak Ebron out of the backfield to the back corner of the end zone. Brissett throws the ball up to his big, receiving tight end who extends his one hand and makes the remarkable catch. He is also able to get two feet just barely in bounds in the back of the end zone for the score. Great play design and an extension for the score by Ebron.
Best Block: Quenton Nelson vs the Chargers
There has not been a better guard in the NFL than Quenton Nelson this season. He has struggled a tad the last two weeks as he has been nursing a hip injury but overall he has been simply outstanding in his second NFL season. He is a tenacious run blocker, a powerful pass blocker, and the meanest player in the league with the way he finishes blocks. Here he finds work and absolute crushes Melvin Ingram as he attempts to spin back inside. Killer block from the Colts’ best overall player this season.
Best Pass Rush: Justin Houston vs the Chiefs
Speaking of the Colts’ best overall players this season, Justin Houston has been outstanding of late. The aging pass rusher appears to have found his old step as he is dominating opposing offensive lineman left and right. Due to his overall dominance, it was really tough to pick just one rush to highlight for this section for him. I decided to go with his sack against the Chiefs though due to it coming against his former team and how great the rush was. He quickly swats the hands away from the left tackle before bending around the edge and getting the sack. Excellent rush from one of the best to do it this past decade.
Best Tackle: George Odum vs the Chiefs
This category had to be the toughest one to choose from just because there were so many options. The one that stood out most though was the one of the biggest plays of the game against the Chiefs. The Chiefs just got a big interception on the other end and were beginning to steal all momentum away from the Colts. That was however until George Odum made a play. On a beautiful play design, running back LeSean McCoy ripped through the Colts’ defense as he made his way down the field. Odum however makes a huge play by coming from behind and knocking the ball free for a key turnover. This play helped the Colts steal back momentum and pull off the major upset over the Chiefs in Primetime.
Best Interception: Malik Hooker vs the Chargers
One of the best plays in the entire NFL this season came from the Colts’ star safety. With the Los Angeles Chargers driving late in the third quarter, Hooker is able to steal back momentum with an incredible overall play. He comes from seemingly nowhere on this pass play over the middle to make the dazzling one handed interception which he proceeds to run back out of the end zone for a solid gain. An incredible overall play that showcases the elite talent that Hooker possesses as a deep safety.
