Over the course of the last two seasons, your Stampede Blue staff has put considerable time into breaking down Jacoby Brissett. It started with a look at his abilities in New England, following Chris Ballard’s trade to get him. We then had an entire season to analyze his strengths and weaknesses.
One important factor for fans to consider is that Brissett’s performance in his first year in Indianapolis came under a decidedly difficult set of circumstances. His time in college and at New England involved playing in a similar offensive style. When he arrived in Indianapolis, he was asked to play in an entirely different offensive scheme. He had no time to develop chemistry with his receivers and no time to get a full understanding of the playbook.
It has been said repeatedly but given what Brissett had to deal with, he had an impressive performance in his first season.
What makes this even more important today is that the Colts offensive scheme has a lot of similarities to the type of scheme New England and NC State ran Brissett’s past. These systems are known for quick release opportunities and most of the adjustments happen pre-snap. It should be something he’s more comfortable doing. It is also his second season in the same system and he has spent an entire training camp developing chemistry with his receivers to prepare him for the coming season (he played with the first team throughout much of training camp last year as well).
With those ideas in mind, please feel free to visit the following links. We will create additional film reviews on Brissett as the season progresses. Until then, let’s get re-acclimated with what we can expect.
