In a development that may leave some pundits surprised, QB Chad Kelly, who was released by the Colts yesterday, has cleared waivers and has signed to the Colts practice squad. The news was initially announced by the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
QB Chad Kelly cleared waivers and is expected to re-sign with the #Colts practice squad, source said. Coming off suspension, he'd be their No. 3 QB, behind Jacoby Brissett and Brian Hoyer.— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) September 19, 2019
After an impressive preseason, many Colts fans predicted that Kelly might be claimed off waivers due to a rash of injuries among starting (and backup!) NFL quarterbacks. Kelly does seem to be a talented player, however a string of off-the-field incidents cost him a starting shot with the Denver Broncos last year, and resulted in a two-game suspension to start this year.
By signing to the practice squad, Kelly will get an opportunity to continue to grow as a player and hopefully keep his nose clean, resulting in another chance with the Colts, or perhaps with another team in need of a developmental quarterback.
The Colts have announced that Kelly has been added to the practice squad and that tackle Tyree St. Louis has been released from the PS in a corresponding move.
