The Indianapolis Colts have re-signed their new starting quarterback.

The Jacoby Brissett era has begun in Indianapolis. The Colts have verbally praised Brissett, and stated he is a “top 20 quarterback.” Head coach Frank Reich has also praised the 26 year-old’s leadership ability:

“We’re not gonna ask Jacoby Brissett to be Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck was a unique, unique player, but Jacoby Brissett is a winning football player in this league. Jacoby Brissett is a rare, rare leader. He is. He’s a rare human being, man. That locker room loves Jacoby Brissett. They love him.”

Now, just over a week after Andrew Luck’s retirement, the Colts are putting their money where their mouth is and have agreed to terms on a contract extension.

Brissett had a base salary of $2M heading into this season, but after signing his contract will receive $20M guaranteed.

The new agreement is a 2-year extension worth $30M. An obvious pay raise for Brissett, which is a gesture of security for the fourth year quarterback.

This deal gives the Colts time to determine whether or not Jacoby is the long term answer at quarterback. The team is among the highest in the NFL in cap space, so it does not finically strap them.

He will have his first opportunity to prove himself on September 8th, in Los Angels against the Chargers.
