Andrew Aziz’s Draft Primer - Final Mock Draft (3 Rounds) + Position Rankings

NFL Combine - Day 3 Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images

I strongly recommend that if you’re reading this, you buy a copy of the 2020 Anthony Arena Memorial Draft Guide, which was made by our team at Stampede Blue. The scouting reports and analysis in the guide are extremely detailed and you’re guaranteed to lean something from them. Visit the landing page and pick it up for 4.99 today.

Let’s start with the position rankings. For the record, I spent about 75% of my time researching the offensive prospects. In the draft guide, I wrote reports on the running backs and wide receivers and with my background in quarterback training, those are the three positions I feel the most comfortable with.

It’s clear that the receiver, quarterback and offensive tackle classes are extremely strong, but the cornerback, defensive line and running back classes are nothing to sneeze at. The tight end and interior offensive lineman groups are clearly the weakest of the draft.

3 Round NFL Mock Draft

For the mock draft, I decided to go with a rumour and fit-based approach and tried to eliminate any biases I had against players.

1st Round

1st Overall Pick - Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Burrow - Quarterback - LSU

Is there any doubt at this point?

2nd Overall Pick - Washington Redskins
Chase Young - Defensive End - Ohio State

Same explanation as above.

3rd Overall Pick - Detroit Lions
Jeff Okudah - Cornerback - Ohio State

Lions get their cornerback to replace Darius Slay.

4th Overall Pick - Jacksonville Jaguars (from New York Giants)
Justin Herbert - Quarterback - Oregon

Trade: Jaguars trade 9th Overall Pick + 20th Overall Pick for 4th Overall Pick + 2020 4th Round Pick from Giants

Jaguars make the huge trade up to go get a potential franchise player.

5th Overall Pick - Miami Dolphins
Tua Tagovailoa - Quarterback - Alabama

Dolphins stay put and get Tua, who some (including me) believe to the best quarterback in the draft.

6th Overall Pick - Los Angeles Chargers
Isaiah Simmons - Linebacker - Clemson

Chargers add to their already impressive defense with the most athletic defensive player in the draft.

7th Overall Pick - Denver Broncos (from Carolina Panthers)
Ceedee Lamb - Wide Receiver - Oklahoma

Trade: Broncos trade 16th Overall Pick + 46th Overall Pick for 7th Overall Pick from Panthers

Broncos make the big trade up to snag Drew Lock’s future #1 receievr.

8th Overall Pick - Arizona Cardinals
Tristan Wirfs - Offensive Tackle - Iowa

Cardinals get their offensive tackle to protect Kyler Murray.

9th Overall Pick - New York Giants (from Jacksonville Jaguars)
Derrick Brown - Interior Defensive Lineman - Auburn

See trade at pick #4 overall

Giants trade down and get the best player on the board; big win for Gettleman.

10th Overall Pick - Cleveland Browns
Jedrick Willis - Offensive Tackle - Alabama

Browns need to protect Baker Mayfield, so getting Willis will help solve many of those issues.

11th Overall Pick - New York Jets
Jerry Jeudy - Wide Receiver - Alabama

Jets are able to snag a pro-ready star in Jeudy, who should be the #1 receiver right away for Darnold.

12th Overall Pick - Oakland Raiders
Henry Ruggs III - Wide Receiver - Alabama

The ghost of Al Davis gets the fastest player in the draft.

13th Overall Pick - Miami Dolphins (from San Francisco 49ers & Indianapolis Colts)
Andrew Thomas - Offensive Tackle - Georgia

Trade: Dolphins trade 18th Overall Pick + 56th Overall Pick for 13th Overall Pick from 49ers

Dolphins need to protect Tua, so they trade up with their draft capital and take arguably the best offensive tackle in Thomas.

14th Overall Pick - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Mekhi Becton - Offensive Tackle - Louisville

Buccaneers are in win-now mode with Tom Brady, so getting him a stud offensive lineman is crucial.

15th Overall Pick - Carolina Panthers (from Denver Broncos)
Javon Kinlaw - Interior Defensive Lineman - South Carolina

See trade at pick #7 overall

Panthers trade down, get picks and take a stud defensive tackle who should start right away.

16th Overall Pick - Atlanta Falcons
K’Lavon Chaisson - Defensive End - LSU

Falcons don’t need to trade up or go crazy (as some have reported), as they get a high ceiling pass rusher in Chaisson.

17th Overall Pick - Dallas Cowboys
Xavier McKinney - Safety - Alabama

Cowboys need secondary help, so McKinney is the perfect option for them at 17.

18th Overall Pick - San Francisco 49ers (from Miami Dolphins & Pittsburgh Steelers)
Justin Jefferson - Wide Receiver - LSU

49ers trade back and get Justin Jefferson, one of the best receivers in the draft.

19th Overall Pick - Las Vegas Raiders (from Chicago Bears)
Patrick Queen - Linebacker - LSU

Raiders love toughness, and Queen is tough; say no more.

20th Overall Pick - New York Giants (from Jacksonville Jaguars via Los Angeles Rams)
AJ Epenesa - Defensive End - Iowa

Giants add to their defensive line by getting Epenesa, a long pass rusher who should start right away.

21st Overall Pick - Philadelphia Eagles
Denzel Mims - Wide Receiver - Baylor

Eagles get their receiver to give Carson Wentz some playmakers.

22nd Overall Pick - Minnesota Vikings (from Buffalo Bills)
CJ Henderson - Cornerback - Florida

Vikings get Henderson to replace Rhodes.

23rd Overall Pick - Los Angeles Chargers (from New England Patriots)
Yetur Gross-Matos - Edge Rusher - Penn State

Trade: Chargers trade 36th Overall Pick + 71st Overall Pick for 23rd Overall Pick from Patriots

Chargers make the big trade up to make a move that will turn their defense into one of the best in the NFL. Good luck stopping Bosa, James, Ingram, Hayward, Harris, Simmons and Gross-Matos.

24th Overall Pick - New Orleans Saints
Jordan Love - Quarterback - Utah State

Saints wait and get rewarded with Jordan Love, their quarterback of the future.

25th Overall Pick - Minnesota Vikings
Cesar Ruiz - Interior Offensive Lineman - Michigan

Vikings could use more offensive line help and Ruiz is one of the best, if not the best, interior offensive lineman in the draft.

26th Overall Pick - Miami Dolphins (from Houston Texans)
Kenneth Murray - Linebacker - Oklahoma

Dolphins need more defensive help and getting Murray might be one of the biggest steals of the round.

27th Overall Pick - New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks)
Josh Jones - Offensive Tackle - Houston

Trade: Jets trade 48th Overall Pick + 68th Overall Pick for 27th Overall Pick from Seahawks

Seahawks want to move down and considering the Jets need a right tackle, having them trade up for Jones makes a lot of sense.

28th Overall Pick - Detroit Lions (from Baltimore Ravens)
Zack Baun - Defensive End - Wisconsin

Trade: Lions trade 35th Overall Pick + 85th Overall Pick for 28th Overall Pick from Ravens

Lions need more pass rushers on Patricia’s defense and Baun is a potential impact player that Patricia needs.

29th Overall Pick - Tennessee Titans
AJ Terrell - Cornerback - Clemson

Terrell has been getting a lot of first round hype in recent weeks and the Titans could use a long-term answer at cornerback. Terrell makes sense here.

30th Overall Pick - Green Bay Packers
Isaiah Wilson - Offensive Tackle - Georgia

Wilson is another player getting 1st round hype and the Packers need a true right tackle for Aaron Rodgers.

31st Overall Pick - Houston Texans (from San Francisco 49ers)
Justin Madubuike - Interior Defensive Lineman - Texas A&M

Trade: Texans trade 40th Overall Pick + 90th Overall Pick for 31st Overall Pick from 49ers

The Texans jump into the fray in the first round and take a defensive lineman to replace DJ Reader.

32nd Overall Pick - Kansas City Chiefs
Grant Delpit - Safety - LSU

Chiefs give the Honey Badger an LSU safety to play with.

2nd Round

33rd Overall Pick - Cincinnati Bengals
Malik Harrison - Linebacker - Ohio State

34th Overall Pick - Indianapolis Colts (from Washington Redskins)
Michael Pittman Jr - Wide Receiver - USC

Colts 3-Round Mock Draft Recap:

  • R2 (34) - Michael Pittman Jr (WR)
  • R2 (51) - Joshua Uche (DE)
  • R3 (75) - Cole Kmet (TE)
  • R3 (81) - James Morgan (QB)

This draft is going to be different and many analysts believe it will be the most unpredictable in many years. Mock drafts are going to be more wrong this year than ever before and rankings will be off too; there will be many reaches and many steals. My recommendation: cherish this draft because there may never be one like it ever again.
