Many, among us, were hoping that our exalted leader and GM, Chris Ballard, would double dip at the wide receiver position during the 2020 NFL Draft. To his credit, he did fulfill that desire, though the second helping came at a much lower premium that many expected.
Dezmon Patmon is a 6th round pass catcher out of Washington State University. He is a sizable, relatively athletic, leather snatcher that will provide the Indianapolis Colts with bottom of the roster competition, at a relatively thin position in years past.
Still, beyond his physical frame, what other gadgets and tricks does Patmon wield within his utility belt of skills?
Let’s take a look at his 2019 match-up against the UCLA Bruins and start to uncover the surface of his strengths and weaknesses.
THREAD—You guys think Chris Ballard likes WRs, like Dezmon Patmon, that can block? pic.twitter.com/IuOOn707fb

Patmon fakes an inside move here, freezes the corner, and burns him deep down the sideline while making an adjustment to the ball to haul in the pass. This is a play where you see his potential #Colts pic.twitter.com/PAhVihLcKd

Patmon runs an ugly route here, and doesn’t box out the corner nor does he come back to the ball. This is an ugly rep but (optimistically) a coachable moment with an NFL staff #Colts pic.twitter.com/wK4OTQUJ7q

Ignore the mustache in the tiny glass box—Patmon stays in his upright stance and rounds out his route here. This is probably a big reason for the ball placement being off and Patmon having to make a tough grab he’s unable to haul in #Colts pic.twitter.com/niOYf6JwaM

Patmon finds the corners blind side here and creates a ton of separation on his come back. But, again, he doesn’t attack the ball aggressively and flat out drops it, ultimately #Colts pic.twitter.com/0gTJAh8L82

Patmon runs a decent route here, runs to the sideline, extends his arms, catches the ball away from his body and gets his foot down (gotta drag that other foot in the NFL). Nice rep #Colts pic.twitter.com/Plc5Yr31dU

Patmon makes a nice catch away from his frame on a drag, bulldozes over 2 defenders and finds himself on the cusp of an explosive play when he loses the ball on a fumble. Needs to keep that ball secure—a fumble there is devastating (up 11 in the 3rd quarter) #Colts pic.twitter.com/jKlTyExARv

Overall, Patmon has a lot of warts but is worth the risk b/c 1. He’s a late round pick 2. He shows some athletic potential on tape and 3. His athletic profile is pretty good (see below). He’s going have an uphill battle for a roster spot but he should help himself on ST #Colts pic.twitter.com/KWB7nCp2dH
