Despite not having the ability to do business as usual, the Colts have been hard at work hammering out deals for their rookie class. Today they inked contracts with three more of their 2020 draft picks and have deals done with 7 of their 9 players.

It is not really a great surprise that this process would go so smoothly. With the rookie wage scale there simply isn’t a ton of contention in these discussions, and players and agents are able to easily communicate remotely with the front office without needing to rely on business as usual.

Already signed are G Danny Pinter, DT Rob Windsor, CB Isaiah Rodgers, and WR Dezmon Patmon. Teams would normally be ready to start their team activities around this time, but will instead rely heavily on virtual meeting rooms to get the team up to speed. Getting contracts out of the way should allow the rookies to focus on the tough job of learning to be a pro under less than ideal circumstances.

Left to be signed are the Colts’ first two picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, WR Michael Pittman Jr. and S Julian Blackmon. Once those signings are complete, it will be worth keeping a close eye on contract extensions that the team may want to take care of before the season for players like T.Y. Hilton and Ryan Kelly. It isn’t essential that these get done ahead of the season, but the team tends to reward its top performers, and so might be likely.
