Colts select Kenny Golladay and Anthony Walker in 2017 two round re-draft

NFL: Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

SB Nation conducted a two round re-draft of the 2017 NFL Draft. This provided each team site the opportunity to make the same or new selections according to who was available in the re-draft and with knowledge of each team’s current needs. There were no trades in the re-draft.

When the Indianapolis Colts selected in the first round, only a handful of players received attention from Stampede Blue’s writing team. Wide receivers Kenny Golladay and JuJu Smith-Schuster were at the top of the list and it took some discussion and a very close vote to push Golladay over the top. The winning voters felt that Golladay has more consistently proven himself to be a legitimate NFL weapon and #1 receiver, while Smith-Schuster’s production to this point has been resigned to seasons where defenses were treating Antonio Brown as the top priority.

If it matters, there was also a bit of a feeling that Golladay was more of a “blue card” player than Smith-Schuster, and someone Chris Ballard seems more likely to have targeted.

In the second round, the team felt that there were three options. The first two were 2017 Colts selections already, Anthony Walker and Marlon Mack. The third was offensive tackle Garrett Bolles. Given that the Colts would still have Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins, there was a feeling that keeping Walker in the corps linebacker rotations with Darius Leonard and Bobby Okereke made more sense as the priority.

There was also a thought that perhaps Mack would still be available at the end of the second and we could all hope he fell to the Colts in the third round. Sadly, that didn’t happen. There is no doubt the backfield would be better with Mack and there wasn’t any excited by the team in being forced to make that decision.

Grabbing Bolles would have likely cost the Colts Walker and Mack but it would have significantly improved the offensive tackle depth. Given that both Walker and Mack have been and likely will still be starters, and given that Bolles would like sit behind both Smith and Castonzo — and possibly not be the long-term solution at left tackle anyway — Walker was selected.

Here are the full results of the re-draft. Discuss the results in the comments.
