Ryan’s Colts Film Review 2020 Week 1

I had planned to start the season with a critique of Philip Rivers. However, the game film doesn’t really add much to the understanding of what Rivers did right and what he did wrong in week one. While many players on both sides of the ball contributed to the loss, I want to look specifically at the pass defense.

Buckner was ineffective rushing the passer. The Jaguars doubled him only about four times and he didn’t even effectively occupy the space. He was out of the lineup on several passing downs. He was consistently unable to beat single blocks.

Now it’s time to spread the blame.

On an early drive DJ Chark uses Leonard to effectively shield Ya-Sin and pick up a Jacksonville first down, though that drive ultimately ends in a punt.

On the Minshew touchdown throw to the back of the end zone both Carrie and Willis are a step slow to react.

On another Minshew touchdown throw Hooker is beaten and Houston is slow to react.

Finally we have a blown coverage by Moore and Rhodes is late to react.

That’s how you make Gardner Minshew look like he’s good at throwing touchdowns.

For week two: just today a new study came out questioning the genetic heritage of the Vikings. Apparently they weren’t all Scandinavians. Maybe the Colts can use this to undermine their confidence?
