Carter went undrafted out of James Madison after the 2020 NFL Draft but was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. He was highly coveted by the Cowboys after the draft and ended up receiving one of the largest signing amounts for a undrafted free agent after the 2020 NFL Draft. Carter was however waived during final cut downs but signed to the Cowboys practice squad in early September.
Carter played in 44 games for James Madison between 2017-19 and produced 152 tackles, 48 tackles for a loss and 23.5 sacks.
