I liked him more than I expected to

I'll admit that I was less than enthusiastic when the news came in that Rivers had been signed. I had gotten past the likelihood that Brissett would get the keys and understood that he had not done enough with his shot, but I didn't expect Rivers to be much of an upgrade. Unlike many situations where you say "Nothing personal", I found that it sort of was. I really just didn't like the dude's cockiness and I honestly never understood how his throws reached their target.

Bear with me Rivers fans, it gets better.

It started with us not being able to see shit, because the facility was closed. We did however, get to hear him interview. I started getting some of the edge taken off as he glowed about his surroundings and teammates, even adding excitement out of 17 year vet. Then some of the accuracy started making a little sense. If you gave him time and window, he'd get it there and I started to quit worrying about how. I started thinking he had a better grasp of the play calling than Frank did. I still do actually. I'd have given him the keys about half way through the season.

As the season ended, I didn't really know how it would play out over the off-season? I did pretty much establish in my mind that it would be a short list of players that gave us a better chance to win next season. It wouldn't be a rookie, it wouldn't be a cast-off, it might be someone we would have to give up assets to gain. I'll admit I wasn't truly confident when we took the ball with 2:30 left, needing a FG to tie, or a TD to win, that would could get it done. But, part of that was a fear that Frank didn't have time to dink and dunk, at least in the middle of the field and that we might need a PI call on an underthrown ball to get a chunk.

I heard a guy poo pooing his career over the radio on the way home from work. He was basically saying Rivers wasn't a HOFer. I found myself getting a little pissed off? I think he had solidified that before this season and he certainly didn't hurt the legacy during his year with the Colts. It wasn't Unitas in SD, Joe Willie in LA, or to use a baseball reference, Willie Mays as a Met falling down in the OF. Rivers did his part for a good team that had it's chance. He did his job, and in the end, that is all you can really ask of a player.

Have yourself a dag gum good life!
