A Before & After: Comparing Wentz's 19'&20' Season to River's 19' Season

I AM NOT A PRO WRITER, SO THIS IS PROBABLY WRITTEN POORLY

I would love for Wentz to return to his 2017 form, but I do not expect that. I do believe that this trade had amazing value, which some of you will strongly disagree. Let's be honest about 3 things:

1) Watson & Carr were both NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN! The Colts even asked about Carr.

2) We gave up way LESS CAPITAL than moving up in the draft to get a ROOKIE QB, moving into the Top 12 for for an unknown, Top 8 for Fields, Top 3 for Wilson, & No Way Jacksonville doesn't take Lawrence. I actually like Mac Jones, but we would have to give up our 1st & next years 1st just to move in front of those teams at 15-18. We would need to SELL THE FARM TO GET INTO the Top 6-8.

3) You can make a case for Darnold, buy I know they want at least if not more than Wentz. He is a huge gamble also. I'm pretty sure New Orleans will pay Winston more than we would.

LET'S COMPARE WENTZ vs. RIVER

I know Wentz has issues and he made mistakes. Rivers was a proven commodity, but most people on this sight were saying Rivers was a turnover machine and was done.

Rivers 19' - 23 TD / 20 INT - 288.4 YPG - 65% - 35 Sacks - 5 Fumbles (Full Season)
Rivers 20' - 24 TD / 11 INT - 260.6 YPG - 68% - 19 Sacks - 2 Fumbles (Full Season)
Rivers went from a team that only produced (19') 90.81 Rush/YPG to IND (20') 124.75 Rush/YPG

Wentz 19' - 27 TD / 7 INT - 279.45 YPG - 65% - 35 Sacks - 9 Fumbles (Full Season)
Wentz 20' - 16 TD / 15 INT - 219.17 YPG - 57.4% - 50 Sacks (In ONLY 12 games) - 6 Fumbles (Full Season)
1453
Philadelphia produced around 120 Rush/YPG with their QB's contributing over 600 Yards in the season.

I will admit that the Pass % is a worry, but think of the difference this could make. It is a gamble but I would argue a better option than any available.

If you compare the 19' Seasons: I would argue that Wentz was better.
TD/INT
27/7 vs. 23/20

SACKS

35 - 35

Fumbles

9 - 5 which Rivers looks better, but Wentz was a runner also. Neither of those numbers are good and that is an issue that will need to be addressed.

Wentz has been playing hero ball in the past few years, but the Eagles went from 35 Sacks (which is bad) to 65 this year which is an absolute nightmare. Yes, Wentz cause some of them but he was sacked 50 times in only 12 games. Wentz is NOT near Watson level. Watson should have gotten the MVP in my eyes after he took 49 Sacks. The Texans had a much better group of receivers this year compared to the Eagles. So besides Watson, who expected Wentz's numbers not to go down? We only gave up 19 to an immobile Rivers.

How did Rivers improve when NOT playing hero ball? With a good O-Line? Suspect WR's honestly because of TY's huge drop off?

Rivers went from a San Diego 19' Team that was very similar to the Eagles' 19' Team to the Colts. His game was transformed. Nearly 1/2 as many interceptions, 60% improvement on fumbles, and only took 19 sacks on a good but beat up line at times. If we get a solid OT through draft and/or FA then we should hope for an improvement like rivers. If you took away the QB runs from the Eagles then their rushing attack is very inferior compared to ours.

So to those who say he is 3-4 years from the level when he was Elite I agree. But looking at increasing from 35 to 65 sacks, a WR core that makes the Colt's look like a top 5 when compared. (I won't even go into the coaching, dumpster fire, drama) I think is fair to expect a 2019 version of Wentz on a Colts' team.

WHAT WOULD A 2019 Wentz look like on the Colts if he has the improvement like River does. That is a BIG IF, but just think about it.

29 TD / 5 INT - 260 Pass/YPG - 3 Fumbles - More Rushing Yards - 65% Pass Percentage and 19 Sacks. I do believe our OLine will be better but Wentz will create a few sacks because of his own doing so it stays the same.

Add in a BETTER ORGANIZATION, Coach, Atmosphere, scheme planned to get the ball out faster but he has the arm strength to go deep. He doesn't need to play hero ball because of our defense. He is 28 years old on a CAP friendly contract, that can be cut in a couple of years if he is a bomb or gets hurt.

Would you trade next years 2nd (if he sucks he isn't playing 70%) and this years 3rd for that type of production? I think this is a clear win for the Colts given the options he had. This DOESN'T PUTT US back if it bombs. We've had Rnd 2 busts and Hooker as a 1st. Ballard is smart with his picks and money and unless Christian Darrislaw is there at our pick, we trade back to the 2nd to pick up and additional pick or 2 in the 2nd/4th. Yes, it is still a risk. I see it as a LOW RISK / HIGH REWARD move.

Great Job Ballard! Reich, if you make him ELITE again this will go down as an absolute steal.
