The two former Big 12 quarterback standouts and Texas natives are definitely putting in some extra work and time together this offseason.
In Ehlinger’s case, he could do much worse than train with the NFL’s currently best active quarterback, Mahomes, who presumably will go down as one of the greatest of all-time—or at the very least, is rapidly on the fast track to Canton, Ohio.
The Colts selected Ehlinger in the 6th round of this year’s draft out of Texas, and he’s currently competing with 2nd-year quarterback Jacob Eason for the primary backup spot behind new Indy starter Carson Wentz.
At a listed 6’1”, 220 pounds (with a 4.84 forty time), Ehlinger completed 194 of 322 throws (60.2%) for 2,566 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions during 10 starts in his senior season for the Longhorns—as he earned 2nd-Team All-Big 12 honors in 2020.
Similar to Mahomes, Ehlinger has ‘wheels’ at the quarterback position and is similar—in at least that very limited respect, as a potential dual-threat weapon behind center.
Even with capable quarterback bodies ahead of him, Ehlinger could see initial situational reps in short yardage/goal line packages as a ‘Taysom Hill’ like versatile gadget player—or in other creative offensive play calls by head coach Frank Reich.
It’s always encouraging to see a young player like Ehlinger put in the extra time and work to be better during the ‘dog days’ of the offseason before training camp starts—especially with one of the league’s truly elite like Patrick Mahomes.
