When Myles Garrett wasn’t destroying the Indianapolis Colts offensive line and causing game-changing turnovers, he could be found jumping offsides. The first time Garrett did this it resulted in a 59-yard touchdown to rookie Josh Downs. It was exactly what the doctor ordered. That score opened the floodgates as the Colts put 38 points on the board against the league’s top defense.
A big part of why the offense was able to have so much success can be attributed to the stellar play of Downs. Although he is considered to have a lot of potential, Sunday marked a game in which people outside of Indiana will start to know his name.

The speedster has already amassed 401 yards on the season and caught his second touchdown in as many weeks. He is becoming a favorite target of Gardner Minshew and a fan favorite as well. Most thought he was special from the very moment he was drafted by the Colts as cameras caught him standing in silence with tears streaming down his face. He promised to work hard for the team that gave him a chance.
Most players make this promise, however, and many do not live up to that commitment. Downs has been true to his word so far by making plenty of catches. He isn’t just making catches, though. He is making big time catches. Stephen Holder posted that only four receivers have more first down yardage than Downs this season while also adding the below.
Also... Of his 10 third-down catches, nine have been converted for first downs. Have seen few rookies in my time as poised and confident as this kid.

Having the last name of Downs and wearing the number 1 is fun. Backing it up by converting at a high rate with great yardage could be legendary. The rookie has been all over the field whether he is in motion before the snap or lining up in the slot. Wherever he is, he appears to be getting open and converting important downs to keep the chains moving.
While it is still early in his career, the last three weeks have seen the receiver total 243 yards while providing a nice boost for the offense. This continued rise will be necessary for the Colts to compete this year and beyond. Although he fell in the draft, Colts fans can be glad he fell to them. Downs doesn’t look like a flash in the pan. He looks like a player who could pan out in a big way.
