An early look at potential free agent fits for the Indianapolis Colts

The Colts will head into free agency with around $58 million in cap space, with the potential to increase it significantly with some roster moves. That amount gives Colts GM Chris Ballard plenty of room to make some of the moves he wants to this off-season. Ballard does have a few decision to make in terms of the Colts own free agents but after that he has the opportunity to address some of the teams roster needs in free agency. Here is an early look at potential targets Ballard could look at to address the teams needs.

Jaylon Johnson, Cornerback

The Colts secondary is very inconsistent, there’s games where they shut down the opponents receivers and then there’s games where they get destroyed down the field. The Colts have Juju Brents, Jaylon Jones and Kenny Moore pencilled in to start, however Moore is set to be a free agent and no certainty to be re-signed. Both Brents and Jones are rookies coming off up and down seasons. There is a huge need for a veteran corner to be added to the group.

Jaylon Johnson would be the perfect addition to the Colts cornerback group. Johnson is coming off a 2nd team All-Pro year in which he managed 36 tackles, 10 pass defense and a career high 4 interceptions. Johnson would make a great cornerback duo with Brents, however he won’t be cheap.

Josh Uche, Defensive End

Josh Uche has been a bright spark on the Patriots defensive line the past few years. The former 2020 second round pick out of Michigan had a slow start to his first two years of his career appearing in thirteen games and managing just 4 sacks. He had a breakout year in his third year in the league amassing 11 sacks. Uche has only started three games during his time with the Patriots and but has managed 18.5 sacks in a limited playing time.

Uche is a good athlete for his size, standing at 6’3” and 240lbs, the Colts would deploy him as a rotational piece at the defensive end position providing competition for Kwity Paye.

Jeremy Chinn, Safety

The Colts safety plan in 2023 was very underwhelming and there is a huge need at the position this off-season. Starter Julian Blackmon is a free agent whilst Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas are currently far too inconsistent to rely on. The Colts moved Blackmon to a more strong safety role in 2023 but his skill set allows him to be versatile in playing deep too.

Jeremy Chinn is a safety who would be perfect as a strong safety in the Colts system, allowing Blackmon to man the deeper safety role if he is re-signed. Chinn is an uber athletic hybrid safety-linebacker who plays best when he is moved around and faced up against tight ends and running backs. Chinn only saw the field for a lowly 39 percent of the Panther’s defensive snaps in 2033, which is far away from the 90+ percent snap share he logged during his first three seasons, however he did have an injury which plagued his season. Getting Chinn in a Kam Chancellor type role in Gus Bradley’s defense would be a huge addition to a struggling safety room.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Running Back

The Colts running back room was lights out in 2023. Zack Moss stepped into a starter role early in the year until Jonathan Taylor returned from a contract despite and lit up the field in his usual fashion. Looking forward into 2024 the Colts have just Taylor and rookie Evan Hull under contract. Another running back is needed who brings a different skill set.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a former first rounder who never lived up to first round hype, however he has a career yards per carry of 4.2, along with a career yards per reception of 8.6. Edwards-Helaire is a good receiving back, a patient runner and would fit well in the Colts rushing scheme. He would make for a good option as a RB3 and receiving back in the Colts offense, giving respite to Taylor and rotating in with Hull.

Indianapolis Colts 2024 off-season preview

The Colts are coming off a rather successful session in which they finished with a 9-8 record, however failing to make it to the playoffs yet again. Despite low expectations, the Colts improved on their 4–12–1 record from the previous season under new Head Coach Shane Steichen and more than doubled their wins from the previous year even without their QB1 Anthony Richardson.

The Colts are now entering a very pivotal offseason and will be looking to build on the progress they made in the 2023 season and build around Anthony Richardson. The Colts, under GM Chris Ballard and HC Shane Steichen, will have to address the big question marks on the roster during the offseason.

The Colts have a lot of needs on their roster from wide receiver to cornerback and further. There is plenty to delve into, and we plan on doing just that. From looking at the Colts’ overall team needs, profiling Colts’ free agents-to-be and discussing whether or not they should be resigned, to looking at potential free agent additions from outside the team and also looking into potential draft fits. The Colts now head into arguably the most important part of the offseason, in terms of roster turnover, which began with the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

Colts’ Free Agents

The Colts have fifteen unrestricted free agents heading into the 2024 season:

DT Grover Stewart

CB Tony Brown

Colts’ Cap Space

According to Over The Cap, the Colts will have $58,923,573 in cap space (based on a $248,000,00 projected salary cap). However, the team can increase this with a few roster moves such as cutting tight end Mo Alie-Cox which would free up a further $5,920,000 in cap space. With that amount of cap space, the Colts will have plenty for General Manager Chris Ballard and Co. to work with.

Colts’ Draft Picks

Barring any trades/moves, the Colts will have seven draft selections one in each of the seven rounds.

Important Dates

Looking forward to the upcoming important dates for the Colts this offseason. The next big date on the offseason calendar will be the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. Here are some important key dates to keep an eye out for during the offseason:

February 20th - March 5th, Franchise and Transition Tags - The Colts and the rest of the league will be able to apply franchise and transition tags to pending free agents. February 20th is the first day for teams to designate franchise or transition players to use the tag on. This is a two-week period that ends on March 5th.

February 27th - March 4th, NFL Scouting Combine - The Colts and the rest of the league will be in Indianapolis to see the newest wave of rookies go through combine testing and medical evaluation prior to the NFL Draft.

March 11th - 13th, NFL Negotiation “Legal Tampering” Period - The Colts and the rest of the league are allowed to enter into contract negotiations with the agents of unrestricted free agents from other teams during this three-day period.

March 13th, New League Year & NFL Free Agency - The new NFL league year begins and along so does the free agency period in which teams can sign unrestricted free agents from opposing teams.

April 25th - April 27th, NFL Draft - The Colts and the rest of the league will descend on Detroit, Michigan, and will select draft prospects to join their team starting in round 1 on opening night April 25th, and ending with round 7 on closing night April 27th.

Center Ryan Kelly has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Saturdays game against the Texans, due to an ankle injury. Kelly has only been able to practice once this week and it was in a limited fashion. Kelly’s chances of playing look slim at best but with the game being a win and in the playoffs game Kelly might push it further than he normally would. If Kelly is unable to play on Saturday then expect Wesley French to start in his place.

Cornerback Kenny Moore II has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Saturdays game against the Texans, due to a back injury. Moore was able to practice fully all week, just one limited practice. If Moore can’t play Sunday the Colts may need to have to have a shuffle in the secondary, as back up nickel corner Chris Lammons is also questionable to play.

Cornerback Chris Lammons has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Saturdays game against the Texans, due to an ankle injury. Lammons has not been able to practice all week due to the ankle injury but is still being listed as questionable. It does not look good for his chances of playing Saturday and him being unable to play could complicated the nickel position further if Moore misses the game too.

Guard Quenton Nelson has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Saturdays game against the Texans, due to an ankle injury. Nelson has only been able to practice twice this week and was limited both times. Nelson is not one to miss games so it is more than likely he plays Saturday but if he is unable to go then expect Josh Sills to replace him at left guard.

Running back Zack Moss has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Saturdays game against the Texans, due to a forearm injury. Moss has practiced all week and was only limited once at the start of the week. Moss has missed two games due to the forearm injury but looks set to make his return to playing this Saturday. If he is unable to play then expect another rotation of Jonathan Taylor, Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson.

Right tackle Braden Smith has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Saturdays game against the Texans, due to a knee injury. Smith like Moss has practiced all week and was only limited at the start of the week. Smith return to playing last week against the Raiders and delayed through some pain, it looks like he will do the same this week. If he is ruled out then expect another start for rookie Blake Freeland.

Center Ryan Kelly missed practice again today due to an ankle injury. Kelly missing two practices this week and having been seen in a protective boot by the media does not bode well for his chances of being available this Sunday. If Kelly cannot play Sunday expect Wesley French to get the start in his place.

Cornerback Chris Lammons missed practice again today due to an ankle injury. Lammons was the primary back up at the nickel corner position and filled in well for Moore last week. If he is unable to play it leaves the Colts thin at the nickel corner position.

Guard Quenton Nelson was limited at practice today after misting practice yesterday due to an ankle injury. Nelson being limited today is positive news as he looks to be trending in the right direction. If Nelson is unable to play Sunday then expect Josh Sills to fill in for him at left guard.

Corner back Kenny Moore (back), running back Zack Moss (forearm) and right tackle Braden Smith (knee) were all full participants at practice today after being limited yesterday. Moore progressing likely means he is good to go for Sunday, as is the same likely for Smith. Moss has been out several weeks so might not be ready just yet but it would be great news for the Colts to get possibly all three back this week.

Center Ryan Kelly missed practice today with an ankle injury. Kelly was seen by members of the media in the locker room with a protective boot on today. Kelly has been playing amazingly well all year and will be needed this week and in the playoffs too. He will be one to keep an eye on this week in practice.

Left guard Quenton Nelson missed practice today with an ankle injury. Nelson missing practice time has been a rarity this year has he has been a regular participant at practice and been in good health. Nelson did however have to momentarily leave the Colts game last week against the Raiders due to an ankle injury but manages to return after treatment. Nelson like Kelly has been playing lights out this year and will be needed for a potential play off push, he will be one to keep an eye on this week.

Corner back Chris Lammons missed practice today due to an ankle injury. Lammons filled in for Kenny Moore at nickel corner last week after the corner was ruled out with a back injury. Lammons played well filling in for Moore and appears to now be the primary nickel back up.

Cornerback Kenny Moore was limited at practice today due to a back injury. Moore missed practice last Friday and then was subsequently ruled out of last weeks game against the Raiders with the back injury. Moore being able to practice in a limited capacity is progress and hopefully can continue to progress as the week goes on.

Running back Zack Moss was limited at practice today due to a forearm injury. Moss has been dealing with a forearm injury for the past couple of weeks and has missed the past two games because of it. Moss has been practicing in a limited basis for the past two weeks so it doesn’t looks like there has been much progress yet. He will be one to keep an eye on this week.

Right tackle Braden Smity was limited at practice today due to a knee injury. Smith made his return to playing last week after being out for multiple weeks with a knee injury. It does look like Smith may have aggravated his knee injury which has caused him to be limited today at practice. Hopefully any aggravation isn’t too damaging for Smith as he was been sorely missed at right tackle when he was out.

Running back Zack Moss has been ruled OUT for Sundays game against the Raiders, due to a forearm injury. Moss missed last weeks game due to the same injury and was limited all week. With Moss out expect Jonathan Taylor to be the lead back and a sprinkle of Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson in the rotation.

Wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sundays game against the Raiders, due to a concussion and a shoulder injury. Pittman has cleared the concussion protocol this week but the team is erring on side of caution due to last weeks concussion issue where Pittman’s symptoms reappeared before the game. The Colts will be very thin at receiver if Pittman is unable to play Sunday.

Cornerback Kenny Moore II has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sundays game against the Raiders, due to a back injury. Moore was not listed on the injury report all week until today, so it appears to be a new injury. If Moore can’t play Sunday the Colts are going to have to have a shuffle in the secondary.

Right tackle Braden Smith has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sundays game against the Raiders, due to a knee injury. Smith has been a full participant at practice all eeek but hasn’t played for multiple weeks so it looks as if the team is waiting to see how his knee responds to a full week of practice before deeming him ready for game action. If Smith is unable to play again this week expect Blake Freeland to continue at right tackle in his place.

Linebacker Comeron McGrone (illness) and wide receiver DJ Montgomery (groin) have been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sundays game against the Raiders. McGrone has not practiced all week due to an illness where’s as Montgomery missed practice on both Wednesday and Thursday but managed a full practice today.

Running back Zack Moss was limited at practice again today with a forearm injury. Moss had been limited the past two practices this week after missing last weeks game with the same forearm injury. It is looking more and more likely that Moss will be a game time decision for Sunday.

Wide receiver Michael Pittman was a full participant at practice today after being limited yesterday due to a concussion and shoulder injury. Pittman is in the leagues concussion protocol again this week will need another full practice to help edge him closer to passing through it.

Right tackle Braden Smith was a full participant again today at practice. Smith has been dealing with a knee injury which has caused him to miss multiple games. Smith looks set to return to the starting line up this Sunday if he continues this weeks practice trend.

Linebacker Cameron McGrone (illness) and wide receiver DJ Montgomery (knee) both missed practice again today. Linebacker Segun Olubi (hip) was limited again at practice today. While Center Jack Anderson (illness) and Cornerback Ameer Speed (knee) were both full participants once again at practice today.

The Indianapolis Colts released their Wednesday practice report.

The Indianapolis Colts today released their Wednesday injury report for Week 17 of the NFL season ahead of their Saturday game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

However, as Wednesday’s practice was a walk-through, the practice report is only an estimation of a player’s participation if there was a practice.

Running back Zack Moss was limited at practice today due to a forearm injury. Moss injured his forearm in week 15 which ended up ruling him out of the Colts week 16 game. Moss being limited this week looks as if he is trending in the right direction but he will be one to keep an eye on this week.

Wide receiver Michael Pittman was limited at practice today due to a concussion and shoulder injury. Pittman had to re-enter the concussion protocol late last week after originally passing through the protocol. Pittman subsequently missed the Colts week 16 game due to the late emerging concussion symptoms, he has also been dealing with a shoulder injury. Pittman will have to pass through the concussion protocol again this week in order to play Sunday.

Braden Smith was a full participant at practice today. Smith has missed the Colts last four games with a knee injury after missing multiple games earlier in the year with a hip injury. The offensive line desperately needs him back in the line up at right tackle and today is the start of him trending in right direction.

Linebacker Cameron McGrone (illness) and wide receiver DJ Montgomery (knee) both missed practice today. Linebacker Segun Olubi (hip) was limited at practice today. While Center Jack Anderson (illness) and Cornerback Ameer Speed (knee) were both full participants at practice today.

Center Jack Anderson has been ruled OUT for Sundays game against the Falcons, due to illness. Anderson is a key depth interior offensive lineman and will be missed. The Colts have very limited options at the interior positions so they may need to elevate from their practice squad.

Right tackle Braden Smith has been ruled OUT for Sundays game against the Falcons, due to a knee injury. Smith missed his second week of practice whilst still struggling with the knee injury he picked up in week 13. With Smith out again this week expect rookie Blake Freeland to start at right tackle in his absence.

Linebacker Segun Olubi has been ruled OUT for Sundays game against the Falcons, due to a hip injury. Olubi was unable to practice this week after being ruled out of last weeks game too. With Olubi unable to play again this week expect a practice squad elevation to help cover his snaps in special teams.

Running back Zack Moss has been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sundays game against the Falcons, due to a forearm injury. Miss was unable to practice all week due to the forearm injury but still has an outside shot at playing. If Moss is unable to play this week expect a rotation of Jonathan Taylor, Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson.

Wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr been listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sundays game against the Falcons, due to a shoulder injury. Pittman was initially in the leagues concussion protocol but he managed to get cleared. It’s a shoulder injury that is the reason Pittman is questionable for Sunday. If Pittman is unable to play then expect a big dose of Alec Pierce.

Matt Gay was limited at practice today due to a hip injury. Gay practicing today albeit it in limited capacity, is good news for his ability to kick this Sunday. If Gay is unable to play Sunday the Colts will need to sign a kicker.

Running back Zack Moss missed practice again today due to a forearm injury. Miss missing two practices in a row reduces his chances of Sunday even further. If Moss is unable to go then expect the Colts to lean on a potentially not 100% Jonathan Taylor.

Right tackle Braden Smith missed practice again today due to a knee injury. Smith looks set to miss another game, his third in a row, due to his latest injury. If Smith is unable to play this Sunday expect Blake Freeland to get the start in place of him again.

Wide receiver Michael Pittman was a full participant at practice today despite being limited yesterday due to a concussion. Pittman looks to be passing through the leagues concussion protocol well but still has another step to pass before being able to play Sunday.

Running back Jonathan Taylor was a full participant at training today. Today marks his second straight day of practice in his return from thumb surgery and three weeks rehab. Taylor looks set to return to game time this week.
