OFFENSE

ROOKIES

Parris Campbell did not play on Sunday as he recovers from a fractured hand. He is expected to be out at least 2-3 more weeks.

Ashton Dulin took three offensive snaps but was not targeted. He had a special teams tackle and downed another one of Rigoberto Sanchez’s punts deep in Dolphins territory.

SECOND YEAR

Nyheim Hines did see an uptick in usage on Sunday. He took 30 of 70 offensive snaps for 43% of the opportunities, only two less than Marlon Mack. He carried the ball 3 times for 14 yards and finished second on the team with 4 receptions on 7 targets for 30 yards.

Jordan Wilkins suffered an injury in the game that reduced his opportunities to 7 of 70 offensive snaps or only 10%. He carried the ball 3 times for 20 yards, a 6.7 yards per carry action and continued to look like he was shot out of a cannon as he hit the line of scrimmage.

Deon Cain was released prior to Sunday’s game and re-signed to the Colts practice squad early this week.

In one of Zach Pascal’s biggest opportunities as the team’s de facto top receiver, he wasn’t able to do much. In 69 of 70 offensive snaps, Pascal caught 2 passes on 7 targets for 26 yards. He remains the team’s top receiver, despite this missed opportunity, but will need to rebound if the Colts offense expects to recover.

Second-year tight end Mo Alie-Cox took 22 of 70 offensive snaps, or 31%. He was targeted once in the end zone but was unable to come down with the ball.

DEFENSE

Rock Ya-Sin took 65 of 66 defensive snaps and gathered 4 tackles and a pass defensed. He looked much better in coverage and seems to have put his dismal performance against the Broncos two weeks ago behind him.

Linebacker Bobby Okereke took 19 of 66 defensive snaps and made 4 total tackles. His use waxes and wanes depending upon the opponent and the health of Anthony Walker and Darius Leonard.

Safety Khari Willis took 60 of 66 defensive snaps and finished second on the team with 8 total tackles, including 1 tackle for a loss. He has officially taken over as the team’s starting safety next to Malik Hooker. Clayton Geathers only saw the field for 6 defensive snaps.

Corner Marvell Tell took 47 of 66 defensive snaps, made 3 tackles and defended a pass. His impact is still somewhat inconsistent, which is typical for rookie defensive backs, but he has certainly come a long way and continues to earn the right to get more playing time — at least while Pierre Desir is absent.

Defensive end Ben Banogu took 16 of 66 defensive snaps but tallied no stats. In what some fans thought might be a breakout game, Banogu was given limited opportunities and failed to get anything going.

Linebacker E.J. Speed did not play.

The Indianapolis Colts have had a rough go at it lately. The Colts offense, and special teams has been anemic to say the least, but their defense has been doing enough to do their part towards a win. However, the Colts couldn’t pull out a win in Pittsburgh, and now they’ve taken a loss to the Miami Dolphins at home.

Brian Hoyer’s QBR? Yes, a righteous 4.4, with a 46% completion rate and 3 interceptions. This was the most disgusting outing for a Colts quarterback in most fan’s memory bank, and I have no clue how you can put that back out onto the field and expect the rest of the Colts’ offense to have any confidence in their gameplan.

Frank Reich has had better days as well. Knowing that Hoyer is who he is, Reich hasn’t done many favors by throwing out a totally predictable gameplan, and failing to get Hoyer up to speed is concerning, but not all of his fault either. Hoyer is terrible, that’s just the sad truth of the matter, and a coach can only do so much when the decision-making and execution isn’t there.

Today talks of Adam Vinatieri and how he should be let go will persist, just as they have for weeks now. And nobody should be considered less of a fan for thinking so. With a ninth straight one-score game to start the season, this team is proving their neither capable, or interested in putting a complete game together in order to legitimately battle for the AFC South title.

The Colts have a lot of soul searching to do, and even further searching into how those who aren’t pulling their own weight should not be playing between the lines every Sunday. From the coaching staff, down to the 53rd man on the roster, this team has a ton of work ahead of them just to be an above average team going forward.

Overview

I thought all along that this game would be close, I didn’t think Brian Hoyer could be worse than Marcus Mariota. I was wrong. If Jacoby Brissett had played, I don’t think this game is even close, but we’ll never know.

Before you buy into the hype that this shows that the Colts are a bad football team, just know that had you read my scouting reports you would have known that the Dolphins were well-coached and they play hard. You would have known that they’ve played well enough to win in each of their three games leading up to this one.

Don’t get me wrong, the Colts still shouldn’t have lost this game, but between Hoyer and Adam Vinatieri’s missed extra point attempt, the Colts didn’t really have a chance in this one and that’s what’s disappointing to me. It isn’t that they lost to the Dolphins, it’s that they gave this one away.

The 2019 Dolphins started the season as poorly as any team in NFL history. Seriously, they were historically bad. As the season has progressed, however, this team has improved greatly. I know it probably doesn’t seem like a great improvement would lead to a 1-7 record, but really, it’s a massive turnaround.

Brian Flores and his staff deserve a ton of credit. It’s the general managers job to give a coach players and it’s the coaches job to figure out how to win with the players he’s given. It took Flores’ staff nine weeks to make it happen, but they did it when a lot of coaches would have thrown in the towel.

The past three weeks, the Dolphins played well enough to win each of their games, but they only played well enough to win for about 55 minutes of the first two. In each of those games there were a few plays or series that ultimately ended up deciding the outcome for their opponent. Flores and his staff haven’t figured out how to coach their team to not lose, yet, but when they do, this team is probably going to need all of those picks they traded for to move up in the draft to have a chance to draft the quarterback the general manager so desperately wants.

The play above shows that. Down by three with a chance to drive down the field and take the lead late against a team whose only loss at the time had come at the hands of the mighty Patriots. The Dolphins shouldn’t have been in that game. They shouldn’t have had a chance to drive down the field and get a win and when they found themselves in that situation they fumbled away their opportunity. Eventually they’ll stop fumbling.

This isn’t a good football team. In fact it’s a bad team, but it’s a bad team that, from what I can tell watching the games, is well-coached. The Colts should absolutely win this game, but these Dolphins will put up one heck of a fight.

Never in my life did I think that Brian Hoyer would throw three interceptions and just generally be horrific all day long but he was. So, while the media is going to talk about this loss and how bad the Dolphins are, just know that the Colts aren’t the last team they’re going to beat.

Hopefully this is the last game we see Brian Hoyer this year.

Thomas J. Russo-USA TODAY Sports

Over the last two weeks, the Indianapolis Colts have started to fall apart. There is little doubt that injuries have been a big factor but good teams find a way to get the job done. At this point, unless something changes, fans will need to accept that fact that the Colts are not as good as fans might have hoped after big wins in the first half of the season.

Backup quarterback Brian Hoyer displayed the weaknesses in his game that have led to his career-long journey around the NFL. While his first pass to Eric Ebron in the end zone should have been called a touchdown, he had plenty of chances to help lead the Colts back into the game, especially in the second half.

Instead, Hoyer threw two other interceptions. Both of them were awful throws, both in accuracy and choice of target. He locked onto his targets downfield and ignored his check downs on the Colts final offensive drive that could have resulted in a touchdown and a victory.

On numerous occasions in the final set of downs, check down options like Nyheim Hines were open in the flats and could have picked up important yards. Hoyer never even looked in the flat. He had an awful showing and made it clear that Jacoby Brissett needs to get healthy quickly if Indianapolis wants a chance to salvage its season.

Whether fans like it or not, the excuses are starting to sound ridiculous. It may be entirely fair that Adam Vinatieri’s missed would-be game-winner from a week ago was primarily the long snappers fault. Still, Vinatieri looks horrific when he kicks the ball. It regularly comes off of his foot awkwardly with disgusting looking sideways English.

Vinatieri missed some time in training camp and preseason this year dealing with an issue on his plant foot. It is possible that this physical issue is causing Vinatieri to be wildly inaccurate. If so, the Colts need to sit him until he is healthy and bring in another option. Outcomes of games and the weight of game situations have been too often impacted by missed kicking opportunities.

It is worth noting, after Eric Ebron complained about his lack of use in the offense, Brian Hoyer targeted him 12 times. He caught 5 passes on those targets, had one of his would-be catches stripped away for an interception in the end zone, and had another pass bounce off of his hands. It is feast or famine for Ebron this season and he will need to put things together if he hopes to earn a big contract in the off-season.

After breaking out over the last few games, Zach Pascal was relatively quiet. He finished with 2 receptions on 7 targets for 26 yards. It was clear that Hoyer was trying to force numerous passes to Ebron and Pascal and the Dolphins took advantage of it.

Defensively, Darius Leonard may have had the best game of his career. He finished with 13 total tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for a loss, 1 interception, and added a pass defensed. He was everywhere on Sunday afternoon and was easily the brightest spot of the game for Indianapolis.

With that said, Ryan Fitzpatrick had far too much time to throw throughout significant portions of the game. The first half in particular, he stood in the pocket and simply allowed his receivers to get through their routes. Things were a little bit more difficult in the second half but the Colts are going to have to find a way to add to their pass rush to take another step as a defense.

The offensive line did a much better job against the Dolphins defensive line than they did in Pittsburgh a week ago. Hoyer had more time, a cleaner pocket, and was given opportunities to make plays. The unit also opened up running lanes, particularly in the second half. One has to wonder, without the costly turnovers and the missed PAT, do the Colts stick to the ground game more?

Either way, this is a difficult loss. This loss is as embarrassing as the win over the Chiefs was scintillating earlier this season. Chris Ballard and Frank Reich have their work cut out for them as the team returns to division play.

One can only hope that players start to get healthy. Especially Jacoby Brissett and T.Y. Hilton. I’m not sure the Colts will win a game until they do.

The Colts offense is non-existent right now. The Dolphins are in a single-high safety, eight man in the box shell that is designed to make running the ball very difficult. They are single-covering Colts receivers and shading over the top by reading Brian Hoyer’s eyes.

Outside of the touchdown pass to Eric Ebron, ruled an interception, Hoyer hasn’t looked very good today at all. He is overthrowing his receivers, telegraphing his passes, and has done little to make life easier for his teammates.

Let me say that, no matter who is playing the game, whether it works in your favor or against you, the NFL has made an absolute mess of the catch rules. Ebron made a clean catch in the end zone, came down with both feet and went down. While he was rolling over his own neck, awkwardly, the defenders opportunistically stripped the ball from his hands, while he was on the ground.

Ridiculous. The NFL has enough reasons to be embarrassed by how officiating has altered the outcome of games, the last thing it needs is to create its own problems with poorly written and interpreted rules.

The Colts defense has done okay but will need to be stellar in the second half if the Colts hope to win. There is little reason to believe, outside of a miracle performance by a bottom of the roster receiver or a quarterback change, or both, that the offense is going to carry Indianapolis to victory.

Marlon Mack should be embarrassed by completely missing a blitz up the middle that pushed his team out of field goal range.

The only positive thing that comes to mind at this point is the play of Darius Leonard. He has not looked like the dominant player he was as a rookie for much of the season. He has been everywhere today and is making big plays to keep the Colts in the game.

The Indianapolis Colts are heading into their Week 10 matchup with the Miami Dolphins a little banged up. It’s not that they have a ton of injuries, but they do have injuries to some very important pieces to their possibility towards success.

Yes, it’s the 1-7 Dolphins and they’re bad. However, with Brian Hoyer starting in place of Jacoby Brissett, Pierre Desir likely still on the shelf after being downgraded to doubtful, and T.Y. Hilton and Parris Campbell out for Week 10, things won’t be a walk in the park by any means.

The Colts’ ability to put points on the board, as well as their ability to keep the improving Dolphins from putting points on the board will be compromised a bit. Now, the Dolphins are also without their two best offensive weapons in Mark Walton (suspension), and Preston Williams (ACL injury), just over a week after trading Kenyan Drake to the Arizona Cardinals.

As the Week 10 inactives list shows very few surprises even with Desir now being confirmed as out for the day. Quincy Wilson is inactive for one reason or another, E.J. Speed won’t suit up either, and Tyquan Lewis is once again a healthy scratch. Lewis may not be a surprise given his recent inactive status, but for a high draft pick, that is a surprise.

Also, the fact that Le’Raven Clark is active today over Lewis makes it an even larger surprise.

Lewis — a 2018 second-round pick — has only played in two games this season, hasn’t been on the field since Week 3, and it hasn’t been an injury issue for several weeks now. The Colts are having a hard time with recent draft picks it would seem. Deon Cain was waived earlier in the week, Wilson hasn’t been active for a month, and Lewis appears to be in the same boat.

Trevon Coley has been getting the active nod since being signed by the Colts on the first of October and the future for Lewis in Indianapolis appears to be in serious question at this point.

Here are the inactives for the Dolphins today’s Week 10 matchup:

The Colts have the benefit of a far better defense and superior talent across the offensive line, which should allow them to move the ball on the ground against a talent-poor Dolphins team that is doing their best to earn the first overall pick.

Frank Reich needs to have this team ready to go and come out strong early, righting the ship for a group that has had two pretty lackluster performances over the past two weeks. Without T.Y. Hilton and Jacoby Brissett on the field, it is time to see if the offensive line can get right and pave the way for a huge game on the ground.
