Good morning, Colts fans! Even though yesterday we lost to the Titans and all seems bleak at the moment, we can take solace in the fact that Draft season is now officially upon us! For the Titans fans reading this: Congratulations, guys! Your team defeated a team without its top 5 offensive weapons, and the game was much closer than the final score indicates. Without further ado, here are your awards for yesterday’s so called football game.

MVP of the Game: Darius Leonard

The Maniac had one hell of a game and continues with his impressive second half of the season. This time he finished with 11 tackles, 2 sacks, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit. Even though he missed a couple of tackles on Derrick Henry (not much to be upset there, guy is a beast), Leonard was all over the field, and he was one of the main reasons the Colts defense had such a good game on Sunday.

Honorable Mentions: Zach Pascal, Jack Doyle

Dud of the Game (The Grigsy): Jacoby Brissett

It was clear that the game against the Texans, and the implicit criticism of the coaches, resonated with Jacoby Brissett, as he was perhaps the most aggressive he has been this season and finally aired the ball out. Sadly, the results were even worse than when he took care of the ball. Despite the fact he started off really well, throwing a touchdown pass to Doyle in the Colts first drive, Brissett regressed tremendously from there and looked really bad.

To his credit, Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel did an excellent job pressuring Brissett and forcing him into uncomfortable situations, but some of the decisions Brissett made were just mind-boggling. His 4th quarter interception after the Titans kick-six was as bad of a throw I have seen from a Colts quarterback in quite some time, as he forced it into triple coverage with no Colts near the ball.

Honorable Mention: Bubba Ventrone, special teams coach

Superb job on the play-action here on 1st and 15 near the red-zone, as Doyle was matched up with Rashaan Evans and got wide open for a touchdown after a good throw by Jacoby. It was a perfect way to start the game, after the defense forced a Derrick Henry fumble on the very first play.

Worst Play of the Game: Blocked FG returned for 6

First things first, Bubba Ventrone needs to be out of this franchise as soon as possible. The special teams unit as a whole has been horrendous this season. Yesterday was no exception, as the Colts lined up for a crucial 46-yarder late in the 4th quarter that would put them up by 3. Instead, the snap was jumped, the field goal was easily blocked and the Titans returned it all the way for 6. This play potentially knocked the Colts out of the playoff race.

Best Position Group: Linebackers

Not only did Darius Leonard have an excellent game yesterday, but also Anthony Walker and rookie Bobby Okereke stepped up to the task. Both Walker and Okereke had a forced fumble, and alongside Leonard they were the stars of the team. This linebacker core looks very promising and should become one of the best in the entire NFL in a few years.

Unsung Hero: Denico Autry

Even though Denico Autry is not having the breakout season expected from him after having a solid season last year, he still has been productive and his play has improved since the emergence of Grover Stewart as the 1-tech starter. Autry was a big reason why the Colts finished the game with 6 sacks, as he was constantly winning his battles.

Rookie of the Week: Bobby Okereke

Bobby Okereke had another solid showing, and had his best play of the season, forcing a Ryan Tannehill that the Colts recovered deep in Titans territory. Okereke continues to flash the athleticism and play-making ability that led to him being selected in the 3rd round by Chris Ballard.

On Sunday afternoon the Indianapolis Colts did a lot right. They held the Titans to less than 300 net yards of offense. They sacked Ryan Tannehill 6 times and forced 2* fumbles that they recovered. Jacoby Brissett had one of his better games this season in terms of aggressiveness, and Frank Reich called several excellent drives. Zach Pascal showed up in a big way, pulling down 7 catches for 109 yards.

Unfortunately, what they did wrong ended up winning out. Jacoby Brissett threw two awful picks that resulted in a ten point swing toward Tennessee. Adam Vinatieri missed 3 field goals, one of which was blocked and returned for a touchdown.

This game all but ushers the Colts out of playoff contention, and has many turning an eye toward the draft. Before we get into draft talk, let’s take a look at this game and award some winners and losers.

Winners

Anthony Walker

I was pretty critical of Anthony Walker early in the season when he was filling in for Darius Leonard. He racked up a lot of tackles, but also found himself out of position and missing tackles a great deal as well. With Leonard’s return he has been far better. His team-best 12 tackles along with a half-sack would have been enough to have given him an admirable performance, but it was his forced fumble on the Titans’ first play from scrimmage that set the tone for a defense that played a mostly good game.

Bobby Okereke

The Colts weren’t done on defense through the first quarter. Rookie linebacker Bobby Okereke has been a rotational defender since the return of Darius Leonard, but took advantage of an opportunity and managed to both get a sack of Ryan Tannehill, and also force a fumble that was recovered by Justin Houston that set the Colts offense up on the Titans’ 33-yard line.

Darius Leonard

Not to be outdone in a linebacker group that shone Sunday, Darius Leonard had 11 tackles himself and added 2 sacks. Since his return he has been excellent, and his sack total for the season sits at 5 currently. That’s just 2 shy of his rookie season, despite having played in just 9 games this season due to his concussion. This was a solid day for the Colts linebackers, and Leonard came up big for them, as he seems to always do.

Zach Pascal and Jack Doyle

The Colts desperately needed someone to step up in the passing game, and both Pascal and Doyle answered the bell. They found themselves consistently open, accounting for 182 of the 319 passing yards, with Doyle grabbing a touchdown. Zach Pascal has really proven himself to be a talented part of the offense, and if though he is not up to consistently needing to play as the WR1, he certainly has earned a spot on this roster and should be a part of the team going forward.

Honorable Mentions

Kenny Moore got himself another half sack and continues his run of being a great slot corner

Denico Autry got on the board with a half sack as well—his last sack came against the Titans in week 2.

George Odum also had a half a sack, an impressive feat since he was in on just 12 defensive snaps.

Marcus Johnson had another solid game with 4 catches for 55 yards.

Losers

Special Teams

Adam Vinatieri has gotten a lot of criticism this season and he’s deserved it. On the season he has hit just 68% of his field goals and 78.6% of extra points. Those numbers are unacceptable, and while there is room to note that some extenuating circumstances have hurt him at times, it ultimately doesn’t matter. Vinny missed 3 field goals in this game, and two of those were absolutely his fault. Sure, the second one was blocked, but all that block did was prevent the kick from knocking out an unsuspecting security guard standing in the tunnel.

The blocking deserves plenty of blame as well. It is pretty tough to kick a field goal with defensive players eating up the line, and that is exactly what happened on the kick that was blocked and returned for a touchdown. It was a play that swung the game, and it was a result of the line getting utterly beaten.

There are serious questions that need to be asked in the offseason with regard to a special teams unit that has been poor on the season. They rank 23rd in DVOA according to Football Outsiders. That is a phase of the game that they cannot afford to be lacking.

Jacoby Brissett

This was a strange day for Brissett. For much of the game he had receivers open in space. He took shots downfield with a level of aggressiveness we have not often seen for him. He moved well in the pocket for the most part, and was efficient with the ball. Late in the 3rd quarter though, he started to struggle. Brissett held the ball too long on a play, allowing the defensive end to get pressure after several seconds, and made a bad throw on the move that sailed over Jack Doyle and into the hands of a defender. The play simply took too long, and he made a bad throw. It resulted in 3 points for the Titans.

Brissett also has an awful habit of leaving the pocket well before he needs to. Often the result is that he finds himself under pressure where he otherwise would not have been. He did this several times, and took a sack on one that he chose to scramble with rather than throw away.

His worst play of the day came with a little under 5 minutes left. The Colts needed a comeback and Brissett decided to go wholly off-brand and throw the ball into triple coverage deep. This is something he traditionally doesn’t do, and was more than a little puzzling. Those picks as well as the special teams miscues ultimately cost the Colts this game and in all likelihood, the playoffs.

Honorable Mentions

Ross Travis lost a fumble late in the game that marred an otherwise fine game after being brought on to replace Ebron.

Jordan Wilkins missed blitz pickups on a couple different occasions that resulted in issues for Brissett.

The Indianapolis Colts are not making things any easier on themselves as of late. After starting the season 5-2, the Colts have gone 1-4 in their last five games, and are all but out of the playoff picture at this point. This year’s situation is almost exactly the opposite from a year ago where the Colts started the season 1-5, but battled back and go themselves a playoff berth, and a Wild Card win.

Any way you look at it, these are two stints, over two different seasons in which the Colts have gone 2-9 under Frank Reich. This isn’t to say that Reich is less than a very good coach, however, something is certainly amiss with the decisions, production, and issues throughout the team.

The major issue this season, among others, has been special teams failures. Adam Vinatieri missed wide from 55 yards, sent a line drive that was blocked, and then a blocking failure allowed another to be blocked and returned for a touchdown that ultimately turned the tide in the Colts loss in Week 13. The Colts were up 17-7 in the third quarter, then allowed 24 unanswered points, and made plenty of mistakes along the way to hand the Titans a very important game for both teams.

Jacoby Brissett has been bad for one reason or another over the second half of the season, and continued that trajectory in Week 13, after looking pretty good in the first half. The running game didn’t do much Sunday, the defense gave up some big plays again, and there was some questionable decision-making in this one as well.

The vision for Colts’ fans has altered with this loss. Now, at 6-6, many fans are looking ahead to draft position. It’s hard to blame them, as watching potential college draftees, is probably more fun than watching what the Colts have been doing week to week as of late.

Today, Matt will go through the good, and bad from the Colts’ Week 13 loss, the look ahead, and what needs to change in order to keep the Colts organization moving forward with all of their young talent.

The Indianapolis Colts are preparing to take the field today, with a mindset of one game at a time, and if they can’t win this one, the Colts likely won’t be playing any extra football this year.

The early news in the week about Marlon Mack and T.Y. Hilton being ruled out was disheartening, but there was still hope for a few others to get on the field this week. Unfortunately, Parris Campbell won’t be one of those suiting up this week as his hand simply hasn’t healed up enough.

In this episode the guys talk Colts vs Titans in what amounts to a critical match-up that could decide whether the Colts can push for a playoff spot or see their season go out with a whimper.

They break down how the Colts offense matches up with a solid Titans defense that has gained a play-maker since the last time they played and how they might attack the Titans with their offensive skill positions severely depleted. Then they talk defense and whether or not the Colts defense can stand up to a greatly improved Titans offense with Ryan Tannehill under center and Derrick Henry playing his best professional football.

Finally, they make their bold predictions and make their picks for winners in the game.

Yesterday the Indianapolis Colts took a step back in a lot of ways in terms of their health heading into their Week 13 matchup with the Tennessee Titans. T.Y. Hilton is already out, Marlon Mack won’t be back yet, and Eric Ebron is now on Injured-Reserve.

That’s three of the Colts top weapons, and against a stiff Tennessee defense, that’s not the brightest outlook for another big AFC South meeting at this point in the season.

Otherwise, today’s injury report bounced back somewhat. Quenton Nelson was a full participant today after being out of practice yesterday. Mo Alie-Cox, Rock Ya-Sin, and Khari Willis were all full-go today and are collectively listed as questionable.

All of that is very good news. As is that Parris Campbell was limited again today — which is an improvement — and as Frank Reich stated recently, he’ll have to prove on the practice field that he can be ready to go. Campbell is also listed as questionable this week. The Colts could sure use an influx of playmaking ability at the WR position right now, especially with Devin Funchess yet be moved onto the 53-man roster.

Clayton Geathers, Denico Autry, Anthony Castonzo, and Justin Houston were all given rest days today, while Jabaal Sheard was back to being a full participant after a rest day yesterday.

Last week’s loss against the Texans makes this match-up with the Tennessee Titans all the more important. With the Titans playing better than they have all season, and with everything on the line, the Colts will host a team they’ve beaten regularly in the hopes that they can keep themselves in the playoff discussion. Here’s how you can catch the action.

Just yesterday there was some optimism surrounding the Indianapolis Colts’ injury situation. Today, some of that has vanished as the Colts prepare for another critical AFC South matchup with the Tennessee Titans.

As of yesterday, T.Y. Hilton was limited in practice, and most of us just presumed that it was simply another week of caution for his calf issues that forced him to be limited last week against the Houston Texans.

Today we learned that Hilton has suffered a setback on his way back into the lineup, and has already been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup. This isn’t good news for Jacoby Brissett and the receiving corps in general as they’ve struggled tremendously to become significant parts of the offense’s gameplan with or without Hilton in the lineup.

Additionally, Marlon Mack and Mo Alie-Cox were both non-participants again today which is no surprise to anyone, but Quenton Nelson was also a non-participant today after being limited yesterday with his hip issue.

Today’s report appears to have squeezed the positivity out of this week’s lead in to Sunday’s game even more after Rock Ya-Sin went from a full participant yesterday, to limited in today’s practice. Maybe that’s caution being excercised, or maybe that’s another setback in how Ya-Sin feels as the week progresses.

Parris Campbell was limited again today, and Clayton Geathers was full-go today, and Khari Willis was a full participant as well, and looks like he’s progressing out of concussion protocol heading into Sunday’s matchup which is very good news. Jabaal Sheard was also given a rest day today and is nothing to be concerned about as that has also been an every week occurrence.
