At least four Colts rookies were highly involved in Sunday’s road test in Cleveland. Jonathan Taylor continues to serve as the team’s primary rusher, Julian Blackmon has continued to have an impact on defense, Isaiah Rodgers showed off his speed in the return game and Rodrigo Blankenship appears to be settling in as the team’s placekicker.

Here’s a closer look at their contributions.

OFFENSE

Jonathan Taylor received over half of the offensive snaps in the backfield. Nyheim Hines continued to be the third down and change of pace option. The difference in terms of production was considerable. Taylor rushed the ball 12 times for 57 yards and a touchdown, an average of 4.8 yards per carry and he is still leaving yards on the football field. While it’s true that Cleveland led from the second quarter on, it’s also true that the Colts have not committed to making running the football their identity in 2020.

With a backup left tackle against the best defensive end in the league, it’s kind of incredible that wasn’t the plan coming into the game. With a back who was averaging a first down on every two carries, why not control the ball and impose your will on the ground? It’s what has worked for the Browns to get their recent streak going and the Colts seem unwilling to get back to the basics.

DEFENSE

While the Colts front seven is getting a lot of deserved attention to start the season, the secondary has frequently outperformed any preseason expectations. One important reason for this is the stellar play of rookie safety Julian Blackmon. It remains astonishing to think that he left his last college game in December with a torn ACL only to find his way into regular season action in the NFL well less than a year later.

Blackmon brings speed and range to the backend of the defense, the kind of speed and range the Colts were hoping to add with Malik Hooker. He is a great complement to Khari Willis and together they present a formidable challenge to opponents. Despite spending his entire summer rehabbing and trying to simply get back into football shape, Blackmon has played with incredible speed and instincts and lays bone-rattling hits that you wouldn’t expect looking at him.

SPECIAL TEAMS

While rookie kicker Rodrigo Blankenship showed some early nerves, he has settled in the last couple of weeks to give the Colts a reliable scoring option when things breakdown in the red zone. He is currently the league’s leading scorer and really appears to be settling in with the team. If he can continue to build confidence, the Colts may have a long-term solution and a group of young kickers that is arguably the best in the league.

Rookie defensive back and return specialist Isaiah Rodgers made Colts scouts and his coaches look good on Sunday. His second half kick return for a touchdown that came on the heels of a Philip Rivers pick six was incredible. Coaches talked about his talent and the feeling that he was getting really close to running a kick back in the week leading up to the game and Rodgers came through. With Rodgers and Hines fielding kicks and punts, the special teams room looks even stronger.

Speaking of special teams rooms, rookie Jordan Glasgow quietly led the team with two special teams tackles. He is second on the team with 5 combined special teams tackles to go along with the punt block in the first quarter a week ago.

While last season was partially defined by special teams struggles, this season has seen the Colts establish one of the strongest special teams units in the league.

The Colts win streak came to an end on Sunday after a 32-23 loss to the Cleveland Browns. There was no doubt that this would be a tough game for the Colts to win, especially with several of the team’s top players sidelined due to injury. Over the weekend, I offered a player on offense and defense that I thought would need to make big impacts if the Colts had any plans of winning. You can find that article linked here.

Let’s see how my players performed.

DEFENSE

Bobby Okereke (LB)

Okereke was certainly one of the bright spots for the Colts on Sunday. Last week Okereke injured his thumb and had to have it wrapped for the game against the Browns. There was no way to tell how it would affect him, but it is safe to say that it did not hold him back.

Okereke led the team in total tackles with 10. Eight of which were solo. He also had one pass defended, and most importantly, intercepted Baker Mayfield which would lead to a field goal by Rodrigo Blankenship, making it a one possession game.

In the absence of the injured Darius Leonard, you could not have asked for a better performance from Okereke. The first half seemed a little shaky here and there for the defense, but they really got it together in the second half and a lot of that credit should go to Okereke. Another solid game for the second year linebacker.

OFFENSE

Le’Raven Clark (LT)

Let’s just say, the Colts were really missing Anthony Castonzo this week.

Clark played in every offensive snap on Sunday, but was consistently being dominated by Myles Garrett, especially in the first half. The broadcast showed several replays of Garrett bullying Clark and applying pressure on Rivers.

Everyone expected this coming into the game, there isn’t much you can do about it. Garrett is just an absolute beast on the field. One prime example of Garrett’s impact was when he pressured and forced him to throw the ball away while in the end zone, this of course resulted in a safety.

#Colts QB: Rivers throws the ball away..to no-one in the area.

Safety. pic.twitter.com/ionHXmAILU
— Lawrence Owen NFL (@Colts_Law) October 11, 2020

Watch how Garrett pushes Clark back like it’s nothing until he eventually finds Rivers who had no choice but to throw the ball. Rivers ended up throwing to an area of the field where no Colts players were, and the Browns got two points and the ball back.

This was not the only example of this happening on Sunday, just maybe the most costly of them all. I said the Colts would need Clark to have a huge game, and this is exactly what I meant by that. The constant pressure on the quarterback forced Rivers to make some pretty awful decisions with the ball. You’re not going to win too many games when a guy like Myles Garrett can disrupt an offense the way he did on Sunday.

While the game script fit what the Colts needed to accomplish in Cleveland, they failed to capitalize on the scoreboard.

Matt Eberflus asked his defense to generate pressure with the front four in the first half and asked his secondary to play a lot of off zone coverage. The results is that Baker Mayfield was able to escape the pocket and make throws on the run into large windows. Once Eberflus made second half adjustments, Mayfield faced more pressure and made big mistakes that nearly turned the game around.

Cleveland’s top ranked NFL rushing offense was essentially a non-factor the entire game. The group was held to an under 4 ypc average and it would have been much lower if not for a game-sealing 28-yard run by D’Ernest Johnson to seal the game.

Frank Reich and Philip Rivers have yet to show signs that they’re figuring things out with the offense. Injuries to Parris Campbell and Michael Pittman Jr. are certainly not helping matters, and the injury to starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo was as costly as fans had feared, but there is very little sign of making progress in a positive direction from week-to-week.

There are games where the offense will need to score more multiple touchdowns to win. On the road against a talent-filled Browns offense is a prime example. Until the offense can put points on the board, the Colts will face an uphill struggle against quality opponents.

OFFENSE

Philip Rivers has made momentum killing mistakes in both of the Colts losses this season. He doesn’t appear to have found a good rhythm or built a solid rapport with his receiving targets yet. He has a habit of trying to force bad throws or panicking in a collapsing pocket and making rushed decisions.

When there are questions about a quarterbacks decision-making, accuracy and command of the offense after five weeks, it’s not a good sign.

P Rivers QB 56 100%

The Colts relied heavily on Jonathan Taylor out of the backfield. Taylor again showed the athleticism that enticed the Colts to select him in the second round but continues to struggle at times with his vision.

Life as a running back isn’t easy. Half of the time people will yell at you for not hitting the hold hard and without any wasted motion. The other half they will yell at you for not being more patient and showing good vision to get the most out of a play.

Either way, unless something changes this offense is currently going to live or die on its ability to figure things out on the ground.

J Taylor RB 31 55%
N Hines RB 21 38% 2 7%
J Wilkins RB 2 4% 8 29%

The wide receivers remain a glaring weakness to this point in the season. The hope was the Hilton and Rivers would be able to establish the kind of rapport you expect out of veterans. The hope was the Rivers would identify Hilton’s talents and throw him open. The hope was the Hilton was going to look like a rejuvenated player after an injury-filled season in 2019.

Instead, the Colts have lost two of their three top receivers to injury and Hilton is off to the slowest start since his rookie season. The biggest threat of a downfield passing game in the receiver room to this point has likely been Marcus Johnson and he spends more time off of the roster or on the practice squad than he does on the active roster.

T Hilton WR 53 95%
Z Pascal WR 51 91%
M Johnson WR 30 54%
A Dulin WR 7 12% 16 57%
D Fountain WR 5 9%

If T.Y. Hilton was expected to be the team leader at wide receiver, Jack Doyle was expected to be the steady veteran presence at tight end. To this point, Doyle has been called for numerous offensive holding penalties that have helped to slow down drives and has looked sluggish as a route runner and pass catcher. His timing is clearly off with Rivers.

The best tight end on the team this season, Mo Alie-Cox, finds himself fighting to get reps. This despite the fact that he has clearly been the best blocking tight end on the team. Oh yeah, he’s also been clearly the most dangerous pass-catcher of the group this year as well.

It was nice to see Rivers start to figure things out late in the game with Trey Burton but there is no sense of any balance at this point for the tight ends.

J Doyle TE 34 61%
T Burton TE 25 45%
M Alie-Cox TE 21 38% 6 21%

The Colts can ill afford to lose Anthony Castonzo for any extended period. The need for a young left tackle prospects is glaring. Le’Raven Clark had his hands full with the league’s most dominant pass rusher this season but he was also asked to face Garrett one-on-one for much of the game.

Until this offensive line figures out how to run block again, Indianapolis and its offense will struggle. This team is a consistent running offense away from hurting opponents in the same was the Browns have gotten things going over the last four games.

DEFENSE

This defensive line is one edge rusher away from being dominant. If Kemoko Turay can return to the field and collapse the pocket on the edge in the same way Justin Houston has been able to do so from the other side, opposing quarterbacks will hurried consistently.

As it stands, this defensive line is a juggernaut against the run but inconsistent rushing the passer. Matt Eberflus needs to be more creative and proactive in his attempts to generate pressure from different levels of the defense until Turay returns.

D Buckner DE 67 92% 12 43%
D Autry DE 54 74% 5 18%
J Houston DE 49 67%
G Stewart NT 48 66% 12 43%
A Muhammad DE 37 51% 5 18%
T Stallworth DT 15 21% 2 7%
T Lewis DE 12 16% 7 25%
B Banogu DE 10 14% 7 25%

Even without Darius Leonard, the Colts linebackers looked like a force for much of the game. Bobby Okereke has looked like a budding start. Anthony Walker continues to play excellent football.

If not for some short-zone coverage issues in the first half, particularly against Austin Hooper, this unit would have been nearly flawless. Leonard’s absence may have opened this up for Hooper to be more active early in the game but Colts fans should feel really comfortable with a trio with Leonard, Walker and Okereke that can gives opponents fits the rest of the way.

A Walker LB 73 100% 8 29%
B Okereke LB 73 100% 2 7%
Z Franklin LB 26 36% 23 82%

Perhaps the most interesting adjustment for the Colts in this game is that there were fewer nickel sets featuring a third cornerback than one might have otherwise anticipated. Additionally, Eberflus likes Kenny Moore matching up on the outside with Cleveland’s pass-catchers more than the seemed to like Rock Ya-Sin in that role.

Regardless, the first half saw far too many soft zones that were exploited by Baker Mayfield. It seems that every game the defense makes some adjustments to tight things up. Also, it seems that the defense is rewarded whenever it is forced to be more aggressive. Perhaps it is time to start being aggressive early in games?

K Moore CB 73 100% 2 7%
X Rhodes CB 67 92%
R Ya-Sin CB 49 67%
T Carrie CB 4 5% 21 75%

The Colts had a mixed performance at safety in Cleveland. Julian Blackmon continues to look like a promising young star. Khari Willis is a solid safety but appears better against the run than the pass. Tavon Wilson was abused when he took the field on defense to spell Blackmon — who missed a series due to a groin injury.

With Malik Hooker out for the season, the Colts will need Blackmon and Willis to stay healthy. As with most teams, going to the fourth option results in a meaningful drop-off in performance.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Colts special teams unit had another strong game. Rookie Rodrigo Blankenship was perfect on the day. Rigoberto Sanchez had one punt that landed inside the 20 and netted 49 yards. Isaiah Rodgers ran back a kickoff return for a touchdown to breath life into the Colts in the second half, neutralizing a devastating pick-six thrown by Rivers in the previous play and getting back into striking distance after going down 17 points.

When Frank Reich and Chris Ballard brought in veteran quarterback Philip Rivers this offseason, it’s safe to say that they were expecting different results. Rivers has made numerous mistakes in two road games that Indianapolis simply could not overcome. What’s perhaps most concerning is that there doesn’t appear to be a sign that the offense is progressing. The same mistakes and inconsistencies from Week 1 remain.

This season is without anything that resembles a dominant, start to finish drive. Even the scoring drives this season have typically included offensive penalties or other errors that made the drives feel more like a relief than like an expected outcome. Even in this game, when Rivers let the ball fly in the red zone targeting Trey Burton, you could feel the fan base hold its breath. With the game on the line, the Colts had to settle for a field goal.

The issue for Rivers is that he continues to make bad decisions with the football. He faced a ton of pressure today, of that there is no doubt, but his telegraphed rainbow pass in the direction of T.Y. Hilton was absolutely awful. His forced throw to Mo Alie-Cox with three defenders around him that led to a second interception, was another head scratcher. Even his throw out of bounds from his own end zone that resulted in a safety was ridiculous.

Rivers is responsible for gifting the Browns with 9 second half points. Those points were all it took to cost the Colts a chance to win the game.

The Colts defense? Dominant.

The Browns entered the game with the best rushing attack in football. They were held to 124 yards on 33 carries for a 3.75 yards per carry average. If not for a run of over 20 yards by D’Ernest Johnson in the fourth quarter, the defense held the Browns to even less.

It should be said, with Kareem Hunt on the sideline the Colts should have been ready for a desperate attempt to get the ball outside the tackles. It wasn’t a surprise to see the Browns stay conservative and hand the ball off and even less that they would try to overwhelm one side to get the edge.

Still, absent the field goal to end the game, the defense pitched a second half shutout against a team that put up nearly 50 points a week ago.

Frank Reich and Nick Sirianni are going to need to figure things out in a hurry. The running game has been lackluster. The offensive line has clearly regressed. Rivers has not established a rapport with any of his targets. There is much to overcome.

It is fair to acknowledge that Colts fans have a reason to feel particularly good about the defense moving forward given that All Pro linebacker Darius Leonard didn’t play and Bobby Okereke looked like a star in his place. When Kemoko Turay returns to the field and Sheldon Day bolsters the depth on the interior, one of the top defenses in the NFL could get even better.

It is also fair to acknowledge that asking Le’Raven Clark to handle Myles Garrett one-on-one for much of the game was a recipe for disaster. Anthony Castonzo would have likely had his own hands full in that assignment and his absence went a long way to speed Rivers up quite a bit in the pocket.

Still, the offense was responsible for 16 points, 9 of them required the leg of rookie kicker Rodrigo Blankenship. A kickoff returned for a touchdown by Isaiah Rodgers in the second half is what kept the Colts in striking defense but Rivers and Reich were never able to capitalize.

Indianapolis will need to rebound at home against the Bengals and on the road in Detroit. Currently 3-2, the Colts are second in the AFC South and have work to do to make up ground or to stay in a position to earn a playoff spot. The defense is doing its part. It’s time for the offense to do the same.

FIRST HALF THOUGHTS

In terms of game script, the Colts have to be pleased. The Browns entered the game as the top rushing offense in the league by a wide margin. Cleveland hasn’t been able to get anything going on the ground and has been forced to rely on Baker Mayfield to throw the football. This should give the Colts the best chance to win the football game.

Sadly, the defense has been playing soft in the secondary and the defensive line has been unable to generate consistent pressure on Mayfield. The result is a lot of wide open passes at in open zones that sustain long drives. Cleveland are in no hurry to speed the game up and their ability to hold onto the football is taking the wind out of the sails of any Colts offensive rhythm.

In order to overcome the 10 point deficit in the first half, the Colts have to find a way to get off of the football field. There were two or three opportunities to create turnovers, including one that was a failed challenge, and Indianapolis needs to get one to go their way. When the offense gets the ball, it needs to find a rhythm and give the defense a chance to catch their breath.

Heading into their Week 5 matchup with the Cleveland Browns, the Indianapolis Colts are more banged up than they have been to this point in the season. The loss of Paris Campbell and Marlon Mack have certainly affected the offense, but now with Darius Leonard and Anthony Castonzo being ruled out earlier in the week, the Colts face real challenges as a unit on both sides of the ball.

It’s fair to say that the Colts will face their truest test of the young season in Cleveland, but it’s possible with their roster taking shots like this, they just may be outmanned in this one. We’ll see if the Colts actually have depth on the offensive line today, which had previously had the league’s longest streak of starting with the same five up to today.

Additionally, with Bobby Okereke suffering a thumb injury in Week 4 and Anthony Walker being listed as questionable earlier in the week, their beat up linebacking corps will have their hands full against one of the best running teams in the NFL thus far.

Both Okereke and Walker are active which is great news, but the linebackers will be a position to watch throughout the game. Otherwise, though, the Colts’ inactives are unremarkable.

How can the Colts run the ball, and how well were they able to stop the run, will be the likely story when this one is all said and done.
